今天上课时，一个学生说他在美剧《好汉两个半》（Two And A Half Men）中看到了一个表达，令他十分费解。这个表达是：until you have more chins than Chinese phone book。这个学生说，当时看到字幕的翻译是“一直到你胖得不能再胖为止”。他说完全无法理解为什么这样翻译。
的确，一看到“have more chins than a Chinese phone book”这种说法，很多人可能都会不知所云。“chin”是“下巴”，“Chinese phone book”就是“中国电话簿”。可是，二者究竟有什么关系呢？
在英语中，“have more chins than a Chinese phone book”是一个习惯用语，意思就是“极度肥胖的”。肥胖的人可能会有“双下巴”（double chin），因此这个习惯用语中有“chin”一词不难让人理解。但是，为什么要用“中国电话簿”来形容“肥胖”呢？
事实上，大家有没有觉得“chin”的发音有点像中国的“陈”这个姓？没错！可能大多数外国人认为中国姓“陈”的人最多，因此在电话簿中占的页数应该也是最多的。于是，“比中国电话簿中陈姓占的页数好多”就被用来形容数量非常多，再加上“more chins”也可以表示“下巴赘肉很多”，“have more chins than a Chinese phone book”就引申为“极度肥胖的”。
我们来看一下它的英文解释：To be exceptionally or exceedingly fat, having multiple rolls of fat (chins) on one's neck. Used as a humorous insult, the phrase is a pun on the word chin and the supposed commonness of "Chin" as a Chinese surname.
例如，Your brother is so fat, she has more chins than a Chinese phone book.
接下来，我们再来看一些和“chin”有关的习惯用语。
在杂志《新闻周刊》（Newsweek）的一篇文章中，有这样一句话：
We really took it on the chin. I mean, this was such an unpopular thing for us to say. And it does not feel good in any way, shape or form to have been absolutely right.
句中的“take it on the chin”究竟想要表达什么呢？查阅词典之后，发现它的意思是“to receive the full brunt of something; to suffer defeat or fail completely; to endure suffering or punishment”，即“泰然处之；完全失败；忍受痛苦或责罚”。
在上面那句中，我觉得“take it on the chin”更多指的是“完全失败”，因此，我们可以这样理解这句话：我们真的有种挫败感。我的意思是，很少人会说这种事情。任何一种形式的完全正确都让人有种不好的感觉。
“下巴”被重重地打了一下，的确非常“痛苦”，让人有种“挫败感”。但是，有些人尽管经历了磨难，却依旧不肯低头。从这种人口中，我们可能会经常听到类似“chin up”这样的鼓励。
“chin up”的意思比较好理解，就是“振作起来”，即“a phrase that encourages one to improve one's mood, especially when sad or discouraged”。
例如，对一个心情不好的朋友，我们可以这么对他说：Chin up, tomorrow is another day。
这样看来，我们可以把“chin up”理解为“昂首挺胸”。当然，我们也可以把“chin up”改成“keep your chin up”来鼓励他人。
“chin”在习惯用语中，几乎都保留了其“下巴”的意思，包括“make chin music”，意思是“说话”或“唠叨”，“to talk or chatter”。
大家可能会觉得奇怪——“下巴”和“音乐”为什么能表示“说话”呢？
对此，我的理解是这样的：“下巴”可以指代“嘴”，“music”和“dance”类似。于是，“make chin music”就相当于“嘴巴在跳舞”，也就是“滔滔不绝地说话”。
例如，We sat around all evening making chin music.
同时，对于一个爱唠叨的人，我们可以这么对他说：You were making chin music when you should have been listening.
