If I remember correctly, It was a beautiful day. The sun was bright and the sky was blue as the deepest ocean. It's a Saturday morning, around 11:00 am. It's a big day for me, I got a casting appointment in the afternoon and a presentation about a yoga and body wear proposal for my school after that which I have been prepared for months. I live on 39th floor which is the highest floor in our building, waiting for the lift to come up was always a huge pain for me. The lift came up, I went in and was ready to start my day. " Ting Ton" the lift rang, I looked up, it's 25th floor. The door opened, there's this white guy who was rushing to lock his door and asked if I can wait another 5 seconds for him. So I held the door opened for him as my involuntary response. Although it have definitely took him more than 5 seconds. I thought he was doing exactly what I always do, pressed the lift button to go down before really being ready, to be efficient as possible or in another way we are just too impatient?
After he locked his door, he walked into the lift with his little black luggage dragging in behind and said "thank you" softly and politely. I looked at him, nodded with a smile. He was a tall white guy, around 6 foot tall, in a dark blue polo shirt with a beige coloured pants. Suddenly, he broke the silence between the two of us and started to introduce himself as Tom which is his nickname, his real name is Thomas and said only his mom calls him "Thomas" when he got into troubles or there's something going wrong with a bit of a laugh. Whether it's his nickname or real name were exactly the same as my boy friend.
I know I felt slightly uncomfortable in that moment. I didn’t realize since when I was back to Hong Kong, I barely say hi to any strangers, or you can say I never. but where in Australia, it was actually a part of my daily life. So when we reached the ground floor, my first reaction was to walk abit faster and sneak away to stay within my comfort zone. Until, I heard the conversation between him and the security.
