What is behind the double helix of DNA?

Let us return 1950s, Rosalind Franklin and MW acquired an DNA photo via X-ray diffraction. In the immediate, Watson and Click built models that DNA is a double helix -two strands wound around each other  based on above data. What a pity that because of cancer, Rosalind dead and then the other three men shared the Nobel prize.
