这周的“每周一段”的段落选自《新概念英语》第 3 册第 53 课In the public interest（《为了公众利益》）。
一、文本
The Scandinavian countries are much admired all over the world for their enlightened social policies. Sweden has evolved an excellent system for protecting the individual citizen from highhanded（专横、高压、强制的） or incompetent public officers（officials查到这个单词也有行政官员的意思）. The system has worked so well, that it has been adopted in other countries too.
译文：
斯堪的纳维亚半岛各国实行开明的社会政策，受到全世界的推崇。在瑞典，已逐渐形成了一种完善的制度以保护每个公民不受专横的和不称职的政府官员的欺压。由于这种制度行之有效，已被其他国家采纳。

American universities are much admired all over the world for their academic and research caliber. Stanford University stands out as one of the most innovative higher institutions. The system has worked so well, that it has been adopted in other countries too.
段落解读：这一段共有四句话，第一句是总起，介绍说明美国大学因其学术和研究水平好而受到世界各地的赞许；第二、三句是以创新型高等院校之一的斯坦福大学来举例说明，该校有一个学术与企业完美结合的体系，鼓励学生们进行动手实践，同时也帮助公司确保能够招到最好的员工。第四句是总结升华，像斯坦福大学的这一优良体系行之有效，已被其他国家采用。
