Fewer and fewer young people are interested in working as a teacher. What do you think are the reasons? What can be done to encourage more young people to choose teaching in school?
The choice to become a teacher has been losing popularity among job seekers. I think that their lack of interest in this career may be due to unsatisfying salaries and unappealing job routines.
The first reason for the shortage of younger teachers is that a teaching job pays poorly. Given a relatively low income and the rising cost of living at the same time, young adults can hardly afford what they pursue such as fashionable clothes and newest electronic devices. It is not surprising that an increasing number of young people choose other professions, which offer them better salaries and brighter job prospects.
Another cause is that what a teacher is expected to do seems to be repetitive and boring for graduates. For example, a writing teacher spends hours collecting dozens of essays with in the same topic and same mistakes. This pushes most young people who are interested in creative and challenging job contents to other careers such as movie makers and online shop owners.
In order to provide better education, an injection of fresh blood is vital for schools, so measure should be taken to encourage young adults to choose a teaching job. Firstly, the government could make teaching a more appealing job simply by raising teachers’ salaries. With pay raises, those young people pursing a high quality of life may consider to work as a teacher. In addition, educational authorities should allow teachers more freedom to plan and manage their classes. In this way, repetitiveness and boredom of teaching may stop keeping young people out of the school.
In conclusion, the gap between what a teacher pays and earns is the main reason why most graduates are reluctant to work at school. The government should assure more responsibility for reversing this situation.
