古文人着逢掖之衣，戴章甫之冠，是讲究人。而一般小民穿襦袴而已。服装区分阶级，并体现人与人的差别。英语中服装词也不少，区别不容易，总结如下：

Dress 是指男女的外衣，有时特指女孩儿的裙子

Clothing 一般不用于个人的服装，而与服装生产有一定的关系。所以children’s clothing, clothing shop, winter clothing 都是可以说的，因为不是指哪个人的服装。

Clothes: 指一个人穿的全部衣服，其实就是着装的意思。包括coat, suits, shoe 等。

Garment: 实际是 a piece of clothing, 同样强调生产，不是general term, 所以可以说 a garment, 有时可以取代clothing 如the garment industry.

Costume: 特定地域、特定时间、特定的人群穿的衣服，比如Elizabethan costume, cowboy costume, national costume. 当然dress 也可以用在这种情况，如，Arab dress/costume。演出的服装也可以用costume, 比如说He wore a costume of black velvet.

Garb: 与职业、地位相关，如the garb of a priest, kingly garb.

Apparel 比clothing 或clothes 要正式，强调优雅。

Attire 主要是指人们对一个人着装的印象。The strange attire of the “invisible man”
