Vocabulary related to leisure time: Parting is an activity that we always celebrate our birthdays. Friendship is about sharing. We often chat with our friends for hours. Being with my best friends means having fun. If we have barbecues, we cook and eat food outdoors. A picnic means a meal in the open air.

<u>We use ‘play’ most for competitive games</u> e.g. playing chess, playing basketball, playing board games (棋盘类游戏), playing sports, playing tennis, playing cards, playing porker (纸牌)… <u>We use ‘go’ most with activities ending in -ing</u> e.g. going swimming, going dancing, going skiing, going hiking… <u>We use ‘do’ most for other recreational activities</u> e.g. doing sports, doing weightlifting, doing yoga, doing shopping, doing exercise, doing karate (空手道), doing puzzles (智力游戏, 知识竞赛), doing kick boxing (拳击)…

Watch out that <u>a word’s emotional meanings (情感意义) are different from its cognitive meanings (认知含义)!</u> Although some verbs have very similar meanings, they are not always interchangeable; it depends on the context. For example, we spend time with friends, or more formally, we socialise with them; more informally, we hang out with them. If we participate in a specific activity, such as a game or a sport, play is correct e.g. playing chess.
