“come to”的几种形式极其容易引起混淆,关键在于分清“to”在搭配中的具体含义。“to”在这种搭配中有4种含义:充当介词;充当不定式符号;充当副词;能只是习语的错配形式。下面分别按从常见到罕见的次序例释各种用法。
1. “to”充当不定式
“to”充当不定式符号时,“come to”的含义为:达到或被带到某种状态或结果;开始对某人或某物产生某种感觉。
(1) to come to bear.
承担
Those who did come to bear witness saw more than a wedding.
那些前来作见证的人所看到的不仅仅是一场婚礼。
Some great, bricklike force had come to bear on him, and his head began to turn.
一块巨大的砖块般的力量压在他身上,他的头开始转动。
(2) She had come to regard him as one of her few real friends.
她开始将他视为她为数不多的真正朋友之一。
(3) the man who had come to symbolize the Franco-American alliance.

2 “to”充当副词
“to”充当副词时,在“come to”搭配中表示“指向”。
(1) We’ll see what he says when he comes to (here).
我们将看到他来的时候说什么。(表示将来时间的指向。)
(2) The yacht came to (there) and ran with the wind.
那艘游艇随风飘扬。(表示沿风指向。)
(3) She came to Chicago by train.
她乘火车来到芝加哥。(表示芝加哥的方向。)
(4) After Lily fainted, we used smelling salts to get her to come to.

3 “to”充当前置词(介词)
“to”充当副词时,在“come to”搭配中表示多种含义。
3.1 表示出现在人的脑海里

(2) Why do the best ideas always come to me in the shower when I can't write them down?
为什么最好的想法总是出现在我在洗澡时无法写下来的出现?
3.2 表示得出某种结论,例如结论
(1) How did you come to this decision? Tell me your thought process.
你是怎么做出这个决定的? 说说你的思考过程。
(2) I've come to the conclusion that we need to try a different method.
我得出的结论是,我们需要尝试不同的方法。
3.3 到达或访问特定的地点
(1) I came to this city because it's home to such beautiful architecture.
我来到这座城市是因为它拥有如此美丽的建筑。
(2) I'll come to your house tonight and drop off your cake pan.

3.4 达到某个具体的数额
(1) Your total comes to $47.80.

3.5 产生、达成,或接受特定的影响、结果或后果(相当于短语动词)
(1) I hope my lies don't come to any consequence.

(2) She had come to terms with the tragedies in her life.

(3) The company has come to terms with the union.

(4) You’ll just have to come to terms with the fact that she is more capable than you.

(5) come to terms with modern life.

注:可以把“come to terms with”看成习语,“term”表示“妥协,协议,条款,现实,等”。
3.6 恢复正常的行为或感觉。 在这种用法中,在“to”之后使用反身代词。
(1) I was starting to get disoriented after being awake for 36 hours straight, but I came to myself after a good night's rest.
连续 36 小时不眠后,我开始迷失方向,但经过一夜好眠后,我才清醒过来。
4 “to”只是习语的错配形式
我们都知道,语法是语法学家根据使用的语言总结出来的规则。是先有语言再有语法。因此,有些习语是按习惯沿用下来的,其构成并不符合现代英语语法。如果要用现有的语法规则去判断,那么它就是一个语法错语。这是习语的一个特征。下面这些与“come to”搭配的习语,就不能按以上任何一种形式去理解“to”。
4.1 come to grips with(着手解决问题)
grips是否与grip有关,没法查证,只能说最可能与grip有关。用法示例:
(1) A person might struggle to come to grips with losing a job.
一个人可能很难角决失去工作的问题。
(2) They haven’t yet come to grips with the problem.
他们还没有着手解决这个问题。
(3) We now have to come to grips with the fact that today’s episode is about to end.
我们现在必须面对今天的情节即将结束的事实。
4.2 come to blows(开始互殴)
blow是殴打的意思,如果to是不定式符号,则应该使用动词原开;如果to是介词,应该使用现在分词;这里明显blow是动词用法。因此,也不能按照规范语法理解。
(1) They almost came to blows during their argument.
他们在争吵中差点打起来。
(2) The two actors reputedly almost came to blows.
据说这两位演员差点大打出手。
(3) Shopping on Black Friday can be so frenetic and crazy that many customers nearly come to blows with one another!
