A good speech must have a good story. Story is a classical way for human to learn. People teach by telling stories long before teaching by logical thinking. So, story have the DNA of grabbing people's attention.
"Because human was designed like that" Luo Yonghao said.
So how do we tell a good story?
There are six elements.
First, a story must have plots and length. For example, if a mother want her son realize how much she loves him and how great sacrifices she had done for him. Telling a specific thing which including plots and enough length is definitely better than seting out all the things she had done.
Second, a good story must have details. For example, "Countless times I was wandering on the street and suddenly found that I was in your neighborhood, I tried and tried but fail to knock at your door" is way much better than "I couldn't help thinking about you".
Third, a good story must have suspense. Throwing out a question before telling a story will grab listener's attention and the curiosity will maintain through the whole process of story telling. Because, one more time, human was designed like that. We were born with natural tendency of finding answers.
Forth, a good story must have the sense of tableau. In other words, your story must be visually attractive. Listeners can create a picture in their mind from your words by themself natrually. For instance, if you want to say it's raining heavily. You can say it's raining cats and dogs. I guess you can see that there are more visually attractive phraises in English than in Chinese. So, finding some interesting expression in English and translate them directly is a good way to improve your speech.
Fifth, A good story must have emotion. There is a popular saying that if you can't arouse people's emotion, then your speech is a failure.
Last but not least, a good story must have sublimation. Telling a story in a speech is never our purpose, is our tool. We always want to meet some goals like teaching, selling, warning, etc. And a good story with sublimations have the quality of spreading because it fits many situations.
Let's review today's learning. Six elements of telling good story is plots, details, suspense, sense of tableau, emotion and sublimation.
So I guess that's pretty much it, thank you for reading, I will share more next time.
