正当从事,谦以待人,方为高贵

上周四,开完振动力学术研讨会过后,傍晚参观了罗尔斯·罗伊斯公司的发动机博物馆,感怀身受。


Today, I am going to introduce the greatest motor engineer in the world, Sir Fredrick Henry Royce, one of the co-founders of Rolls-Royce Ltd in 1906 with Charles Rolls. 今天,我简单讲一讲亨利·罗伊斯不平凡的一生,值得缅怀。



In the north aisle of the nave of Westminster Abbey is a memorial window for him, which reads "In memory of Fredrick Henry Royce O.B.E. Baronet, Engineer. Born 1863. Died 1933." This window depicts figures of King Edgar (the first king of England) and St Dunstan (who brought monks to Westminster in about 960 AD). Sir Henry's coat of arms, and those of the city of Derby where his cars were made. 亨利·罗伊斯毕生在汽车与航空发动机的发明设计方面做出了的杰出贡献,使他成为唯一一名被镶嵌在西敏寺花窗玻璃上供世人瞻仰纪念的工程师。


He once said, "Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it." 他曾经说过,“致力于将每个设计做到完美,学习最好的且将之优化,如果现实中不存在,那就把它设计出来。”


In October 1928, Royce sketched ideas in the sand that changed history and began the design of the “R” engine. He was walking with some of his leading engineers on the beach at West Wittering where he lived. Less than a year later in 1929, the “R” engine set a new world air speed record of 357.7 miles per hour and won the Schneider Trophy. Royce developed the “R” to produce more power and the Supermarine S.6B seaplane won the 1931 Trophy at 340.08 mph on 13 September. On 29 September, the same aircraft was the first to fly at over 400 mph (640 km/h) and breaking the world’s speed record at 407.5 mph. The Supermarine S.6B gave impetus to the development of both the Supermarine Spitfire fighter aircraft and the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine that powered it. 下图是罗尔斯·罗伊斯公司由亨利·罗伊斯和团队在1929年设计的R型发动机,活塞式液冷12缸航空发动机,曾创造出多项速度与高度记录。

Following the success of the “R” engine, it was clear that they had an engine that would be of use to the Royal Air Force. As no Government assistance was forthcoming at first, in the national interest they went ahead with the development of what was called the “PV-12” engine (standing for Private Venture, 12-cylinder). The idea was to produce an engine of about the same performance as the “R”, albeit with a much longer life. Royce launched the PV-12 in October 1933 and the engine completed its first test in 1934, the year after he died, "I have only one regret, that I have not worked harder." 临终前,他说了这样一句感人肺腑的话,“我一生只有一个遗憾,那就是我应该工作得更加努力。”
