① 抽象意义（= except for, apart from）
Outside of work, he has no hobbies.

→ 这里不能说 Outside work...，因为不是空间概念。
② 强调“排除”或“例外”

③ 但在地理/空间意义上（如 Asia, Europe, the city），应省略 “of”
