Students entering secondary schools have access to an unprecedented selection of classes ranging from various subjects required by a general education to highly specialized courses related to particular careers in the future. In some parts of the world, general education is carried out in middle schools. However, in other places, students are only taught career-related courses.
Different schools teach different types of syllabus, from general education to vocational education. Although both systems have their advantages, in my opinion, general education is more preferable for the present world. First and foremost, general education is at the heart of what it means to be educated because it exposes students to a wide range of subjects such as ethics, math, science, and religious studies to name a few, which may develop intellectual skills that lead learners to feel comfortable in many fields.
Furthermore, general education can facilitate students to look at complex issues and challenges from multiple angles and suggest approaches in which to handle situations in a manner that may not be expected. In other words, while studying a more extensive curriculum in schools, students learn to analyze, to develop strategies for problem solving, to test ideas, and to put it all together in actionable plans in the context of a broader understanding of the world. In fact, vocational education alone is far from meeting the needs of today’s world.
In addition, general education can invest students with abilities to acquire not only specific knowledge, but also perceptions, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand society's traditions and customs, its accomplishments and aspirations, its relation and responsibility to the natural world, its diversity and plurality, and its problems and demands. Therefore, it is no exaggeration to say that general education may prepare students to handle those careers that are just now being defined—ones that didn’t exist at all ten years ago.
All in all, since general education is obviously superior to vocational education, it is more appropriate for today’s world.
