1. General Impressions of the book
It’s my first time to join such a reading team, and I think I will benefit a lot from the meaningful activity. The Martian is a calamitous story with a happy ending, even though I haven’t watch the movie or the whole book, I can guess that the Mark will make the miracle come true. After the unpredictable sand storm other crews think Mark has already dead, so they leave Mark without hesitation and return to the earth quickly. Luckily or unfortunately, Mark wake up with nobody around. Anyway, Mark survived and started to think about the way back to earth, as there has no communication devices, Mark has to wait for the fourth team come to Mars. But with no enough supply, Mark decided to plant some potatoes. With his botany knowledge and engineering degree, Mark find way to make water and manure, things are getting more and more hopeful……
2. Details
In order to plant the potatoes on the barren land of Mars, Mark used his own shit as the manure. After calculating the amount of food he needed before the fourth team come, Mark tried to make more dirt and create more water for a higher productivity. Basically, Mark used some easy formula from high school:
Method 1: 2H2 + O2 == 2H2O;
Method 2: As the crews has left some fuel the Mark use: 7N2H4 =^= 3N2 + 2H2 + 8NH3(pungent odor),then use H2 react with O2 to get water
Method 3: Dissolve urine
