Lesson 5 No wrong numbers 无错号之虞
Mr. James Scott has a garage in Silbury and now he has just bought another garage in Pinhurst. Pinhurst is only five miles from Silbury, but Mr. Scott cannot get a telephone for his new garage, so he has just bought twelve pigeons. Yesterday, a pigeon carried the first message from Pinhurst to Silbury. The bird covered the distance in three minutes. Up to now, Mr. Scott has sent a great many requests for spare parts and other urgent messages from one garage to the other. In this way, he has begun his own private telephone service.

My neighbord[=> neighbour] San Liu has a workshop which makes planes in Kunshan, now he just bought another workshop in Wuxi. There is only two hundreds and thirty one miles between Wuxi and Kunshan. - take a message: 传口信; 带着信件用 carry.
- Up to now 到目前为止. 此处搞不懂
until和up to now的区别. (查:<常用词疑难用法>)- I didn't receive his letter until yesterday. Not until yesterday did I received his letter. (receive是瞬间动词, 如果没有被否定, 不用用于延续状态的主句中; 但一旦被否定, 就是延续状态). 该句表达的意思是: 没有收到信的状态一直延续到昨天才发生变化.
- I stayed here until he came. stay是延续行为
- until 接的必须是瞬间完成的时间点. 例外是使用一个状态来表示这个状态的瞬间变化. eg. Must policy making wait utile all data are in?
- 大概这么理解: 延续状态 util time point. 瞬间状态 by time point.
- 易错误句: He simply couldn't wait until tomorrow night. wait是延续动词, 这里表达意思的顺序是 couldn't (wait until tomorrow night). 不是理解为一直到明天晚上才等待.
- 复杂用法: Not until ... do. Not util I left home did I begin to understand how strange my family was.
- 再复杂用法: It's now until ... that ...; It's not until I left home that I began to understand how strange my family was.
- 更复杂. It takes until .. before ...; 直到 ... 才 ...; It took until I left home before I began to understand how strange my family was.
- 所以, until now 或者 until then 都会包含发生变化的意义. eg. Until now, you've had no choice where you bought your electricity or gas. Now the choice is yours. 从前，你从哪里买你的电力或煤气，是无法选择的。现在选择权在你手里（情况发生了变化）。eg. She was assigned to Nebraska where, until then, the company had had no sales representation. 她被派往内布拉斯加，原先该公司在那里没有推销代理机构（发生了变化，现在有了）。
- up to now 或 so far 并无变化之意. eg. They were using charcoal right up to my day. 直到如今，他们还一直是用煤。
- from one garage to another 译漏了
- he start => he has started. 单三的形式总是不注意
- a great/good many: referring to a large number of things or people

I am the founder of Scott's Car Garage and the garage has two branches. One is in Silbury and the other is in Pinhurst.
