There's no sugarcoating it that newspaper sales are in peril these days.
Consciously or unconsciously, we are all aware of the decline of newspapers as we spend a larger proportion of our spare time on Facebook or Netflix,
as compared with only a fraction that we allow for newspapers or news sites like the Times, the Guardians, or Wall Street Journals.
However, on a brighter note, the irreplaceable value embedded in journalism itself is not lost on us all,
especially not on those who choose it as their career path.
Their motivation is admirably consistent: the irresistible need to bear witness to the world.
In fact, this drive is so strong and crucial that it would be inexcusable if there weren't any established prize or event to reinforce it.
Luckily, there is one: Pulitzer Prize, an award for excellent achievements in the realm of newspapers, magazines, and online journalism.
Fittingly enough, the man who gave life to the Pulitzer Prize, Joseph Pulitzer, was himself a famed newspaper publisher.
Born in 1847 in Hungary, Joseph emigrated to the US at the age of 17 after his family went bankrupt.
Left to his own devices, he joined the army during the American Civil War and subsequently hopped from one job to another, without being able to settle down on any for more than a week.
After an unsuccessful law career, he dipped his toe into journalism as a fledgling reporter in a German-language newspaper based in St. Louis,
and what started out as merely a shot in the dark turned into a lifelong passion.
From reporting corrupt or fraudulent affairs, which he believed would do justice to the common people, to managing his own magazine, he basically ran the whole gamut of journalism.
Upon his deathbed, this self-made publisher drafted a will that bequeathed his wealth to establishing both the journalism school in Columbia University and the famous Pulitzer Prize.
