一、重点单词：

1. stretch out: phrasal verb
   stretch out一共两个意思，有没有想起来我们在哪见过？
   a) informal to lie down, usually in order to sleep or rest 躺下〔睡觉或休息〕
   我印象中是哈利收到第一封信被关在储藏室里

Harry sighed and stretched out on the bed.

b) stretch sth out
to put out your hand, foot etc in order to reach something 伸出，伸开〔手、脚等〕

Harry stretched out his hand at last to take the yellowish envelope…

2. stammer: verb [intransitive, transitive]
   to speak with a lot of pauses and repeated sounds, either because you have a speech problem, or because you are nervous, excited etc 口吃，结结巴巴地说 SYN stutter
   名词的口吃结巴也是这个词

3. ruffle:
   ruffle的第三个词义出现

…a real, live, rather ruffled-looking owl…

翻了朗文和牛津都只有两个词义，最后在柯林斯里看到了一共六个意思。我们在前面见过它的两个意思。

5. ashen-faced:
   adj.（尤指因为生病、震惊或受到惊吓）面如土色的，没有血色的 Someone who is ashen-faced looks very pale, especially because they are ill, shocked, or frightened.

We swore when we took him in we’d put a stop to that rubbish…

• take sb in: to let someone stay in your house because they have nowhere else to stay 收留，收容，收养
• rubbish:
  (BrE, informal) comments, ideas, etc. that you think are stupid or wrong 废话；瞎说 SYN nonsense
  Rubbish! You're not fat.
  瞎说！你并不胖。
• put a stop to:
  put a stop to something to prevent something from continuing or happening 制止某事，使某事停下来

7. shriek:

’Knew!’ shrieked Aunt Petunia suddenly.

[intransitive] to make a very high loud sound, especially because you are afraid, angry, excited, or in pain 尖叫，尖声喊叫 SYN scream

8. freak: noun [countable]
   someone who is considered to be very strange because of the way they look, behave, or think 怪异的人 SYN weirdo

9. rant: verb [intransitive, transitive]
   to talk or complain in a loud excited and rather confused way because you feel strongly about something 大声激昂地说；怒气冲冲地抱怨

10. scuttle:
    to move quickly with short steps, especially because you are afraid and do not want to be noticed 〔尤因害怕且不想被注意到而〕小步急跑，疾走

11. get hold of sb:
    (also get a hold of sb American English) to find and speak to someone about something 找到某人，联系上某人
    I must get hold of Vanessa to see if she can babysit.

12. give somebody a dirty look:
    to look at someone in a very disapproving way 厌恶地看某人一眼

13. stand up to sb/sth phrasal verb
    好多词其实不需要查，根据语境你是可以猜到它的意思的，之所以非要在词典中定位是希望大家能学到更地道的表达，小词学精。
    to refuse to accept unfair treatment from a person or organization 拒绝接受〔某人或组织〕的不公平对待，抵抗
    He’ll respect you more if you stand up to him.
    如果你敢于抗拒，他会更尊重你。
    Cliff couldn’t stand up to bullying.
    克利夫不敢反抗别人的 欺侮。

二、其他单词：

1. pull: verb
   TAKE STH OUT 取出某物 [transitive always + adverb/preposition] to take something out of a bag, pocket etc with your hand 〔用手〕拿出，掏出

He pulled out his letter and read.

2. enclose: verb
   [transitive] to put something inside an envelope as well as a letter 随信附上，随信装入
   Please enclose a cheque with your order.
   请随订单附上支票。

• please find enclosed (=used in business letters to say that you are sending something with a letter) 兹附上
  Please find enclosed an agenda for the meeting.
  兹附上会议议程表。

3. Gallopin’ Gorgons

• galloping:
  if a horse gallops, it moves very fast with all its feet leaving the ground together 〔马〕飞奔，疾驰
  a galloping horse
  一匹奔驰的马
• Gorgon:
  one of the three sisters in ancient Greek stories who had snakes on their heads that made anyone who looked at them change into stone 戈耳工，蛇发女怪〔古希腊传说中蛇发三姐妹之一，见到她的人会变成石头〕
  狂奔的戈耳工！你能理解海格这样说什么意思吗？

我们在看一个本课出现的词：

我觉着都可以译为“天啊！”这样的感叹词。

出现了好多，我也记得不清楚，但是人家出现好几次再不好好记就说不过去了，上次出现时是Day2，当时给大家讲解是make a short low sound，今天看看详细解释，原来这个词是不愿讲话的时候说话，恍然大悟！让我想起这词上次出现是那个决定弗农姨夫收养哈利命运的一天当时神思恍惚的他不想说话又得和被他撞到的人说对不起时用的啊，翻书后发现果然如此：

• stamp out

a) to prevent something bad from continuing 消除；杜绝
