And he had heard the conversation, and hadn’t enjoyed it much either, because he kept on thinking that the others were taking no notice of him and trying to give him the cold shoulder.
今天简单谈下either这个小词,一般说两者常用both(两者都),neither(两者都不)和either(其中一个)
either: one or the other,it doesn't matter which one.
常和of连用 eg. I haven't been to either of these shops.(=I haven't been to one or the other.)
或者either …or eg.Either you apologise or I'll never speak to you again.
take no notice of sb.
give sb. the cold shoulder
It was then that he began very quietly to edge himself under the curtain which hung over the door.
it was... that强调句
He did want Turkish Delight and to be a Prince (and later a King) and to pay Peter out for calling him a beast.
Edmund was saying to himself, “I’ll pay you all out for this, you pack of stuck-up, self-satisfied prigs.”
At least, that was the excuse he made in his own mind for what he was doing. It wasn’t a very good excuse,...
at least 至少
make an /the excuse 找借口
The first thing he realized when he got outside and found the snow falling all round him, was that he had left his coat behind in the Beavers’ house. And of course there was no chance of going back to get it now. The next thing he realized was that the daylight was almost gone, ...
句子写作结构,the first thing...the next thing 而不仅仅是on the other hand
there was no chance of going back to没办法回去拿衣服
chance的词条网上有说have a chance to do,或hve a chance of doing 查阅词典都有(一般前者to do都是有目的性的,去做,而doing更多是名词性质,仅强调有这个机会。
另:词典中较高频的用法(作为名词)是~of doing sth./~that.../~of sth. happening/~of sth.
It was pretty bad when he reached the far side. It was growing darker every minute and what with that and the snowflakes swirling all round him he could hardly see three feet ahead.
(informal)You can use pretty before an adj. or adv. to mean 'quite' or 'rather'. (≈fairly)
The silence and the loneliness were dreadful. In fact I really think he might have given up the whole plan and gone back and owned up and made friends with the others, if he hadn’t happened to say to himself, "…"
might have done 本打算而没有
own up 坦白认错
happen to do 碰巧/偶然
...and was putting the finishing touches to some schemes for keeping Peter in his place, ...
put the finishing touches to sth.
Finally, the clouds rolled away and the moon came out. It was a full moon and, shining on all that snow, it made everything almost as bright as day—only the shadows were rather confusing.
Even as it was, he got wet through for he had to stoop under branches and great loads of snow came sliding off onto his back.
be wet through 全身湿透 强调状态.
stoop vi. He is a tall man with a slight stoop.
A stooping man had appeared behind the counter, smoothing his greasy hair back from his face.
They looked like huge dunce’s caps or sorcerer’s caps.

And Edmund stood in the shadow of the arch, afraid to go on and afraid to go back, with his knees knocking together.
afraid to do : don't/doesn't want to do it because it is dangerous or the result could be bad. We use afraid to do for things we do intentionally(故意地)
afraid of sth. happening = it is possible that sth. bad will happen(an ccident etc.)We do not use afraid of -ing for things we do intentionally
eg. I was afraid to go near the dog because I was afraid of being bitten.
Then very slowly and with his heart beating as if it would burst, Edmund ventured to go up to the lion.
with表伴随
心跳到嗓子眼其实有个固定表达have your heart in your mouth
The relief which Edmund felt was so great that in spite of the cold he suddenly got warm all over right down to his toes,...
in spite of=despite 虽然;不顾(只能跟短语,不要跟句子,虽然可接the fact that...
There were stone satyrs, and stone wolves, and bears and foxes and cat-a-mountains of stone. ...There was the great shape of a centaur and a winged horse and a long lithe creature that Edmund took to be a dragon.
Edmund couldn’t help wondering if this might be Lucy’s friend.
can't help doing禁不住做某事
另一个近义用法in spite of someone or something(注意不是in spite of)
:without regard to someone or something; even though another course had been prescribed; ignoring a warning.
eg. In spite of her orders to stay, I left. In spite of the bad weather, I had fun on vacation.
“Is this all your news?” she asked.
news是一个不可数名词,以及前文出现的and I’ve come to bring her the news that my brother and sisters are now in Narnia...
