We are not surprised by modern sculpture any more as some modern pieces have
been on display in public places for nearly eighty years. So it is wrong to think that
modern art can only be seen in musums. As there are a lot of strange forms built in
gardens and outside buildings and shops, we have got quite used to them. In spite of
this, some people including myself got a big shock at a recent exhibition of modern
sculpture. As soon as I entered the gallery, I was informed by a notice that visitors were not allowed to touch the exhibits because some of them were dangerous. The exhibits were pieces of moving sculpture. Suspended from the celing, the oddly shaped forms moved in response to a gust of wind. Lined up against the wall, there were long thin
wires attached metal spheres. The spheres had been magnetized and attracted or
repelled each other all the time. In the center of the hall A great many tall structures
equipped with color lights stood in the center of the hall. The lights flashed on and off
incessantly like traffic lights which had gone mad. Visitors were left with the impression that it was an exhibition of prehistoric electronic equipment. These peculiar forms not
only seemed designed to shock people emotionally, but to give them electric shocks as well.
