《Follow Me 跟我学 (中国版)第3册》UNIT 42 WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT HIM?

Unit 42 What do you know about him?

A. Texts & Notes

1. Do you know anything about him?

(Mrs Betty James likes to talk about other people. She is much too interested in the stories of others. Now, she is with Mrs Joan Archer in a library and asking her about her new neighbour.)
Joan: That's our neighbour over there. He's the man next door.
Betty: Oh! Do you know anything about him?
Joan: Well, I know he's married, and his wife looks very nice. And I know they've got two children—two girl.
Betty: Do you know where come from?
Joan: I'm not sure, but I think they used to live in Oxford.
Betty: And do you know what he does? What's his job?
Joan: I don't know.
Betty: Perhaps … perhaps he hasn't got a job.
Joan: Oh, I'm sure he has.
(Betty goes on to ask how old he is. And she says it's difficult if he's looking for a new job at the age of forty or forty-five. she asks, "what about your wife?" She thinks the assistant in the library is his wife. She's inventing a story.)

 I know …
 I think …(我想……}
 I'm sure …(我肯定……)
 I'm certain …(我肯定……)
 I see …(我知道……)
 I'm afraid …(恐怕……)
 I mean …(我是说……)
A: Do you know if Ted's got any children?
B: I'm not sure. I think he has.
 A: He's quite old, isn't he?
B: I don't know how old he is.
又如:
 I mean he's not at work.(我是说他不在工作。)
 I see what you mean.(我知道你是什么意思了。)
 I'm sure she's a very nice woman.(我肯定她是个很好的妇女。)
 I see you like stories.(我看你喜欢故事。)
 I'm afraid he's not in today.(恐怕他今天不在。)
I thought I saw him in the canteen.(我还以为我在食堂里看见他了呢。)

间接提问常用 Do you know (think) … 或 Are you sour (certain) …
Do you know if your neighbour watches Follow me?(你知道你的邻居看《跟我学》吗?)
Are you sour she is his wife?(你肯定她是他的妻子?)

How old is he? Do you know how old he is?
Is he fifty? Do you know if he is fifty?
Are you sure he is fifty?
Do you think he is fifty?

 the man next door
 the famliy next door
 They live next door.(他们住在隔壁。)
我们学过 next to …,表示“隔壁”,也可以说 next door to …

Do you know him? Do you know anything about him?

2. There's no one like him.

Librarian: Good heavens!
Assistant: Sorry?
Librarian: Who's that?
Assistant: Oh, it's all right. He comes here every day?
Librarian: Do you know who he is?
Assistant: Yes, Mr Williams.
Librarian: How old is he?
Assistant: I don't know how old he is. It's difficult to say, isn't it? Perhaps he's fifty — Perhaps he's eighty.
Librarian: Are you sure that he's — er — all right?
Assistant: Oh, yes. He's never a problem.
Librarian: What's he like?
Assistant: He's very quite, really. He comes in every day just for a minute or two, and looks for a book. His book.
Librarian: You mean he wrote it?
Assistant: No. I don't think he's written any books. I'm not sure. but I don't think he ever went to school.
Librarian: Ah! But you said 'his book'.
Assistant: Well, it's our book, really. He gave it to us about two years ago. I think it's the only book he's ever read.
Librarian: And now he comes here and borrows it?
Assistant: Oh, no. He never takes it home. But he wants to know if someone else has it.
Librarian: I see.
Assistant: He's a nice man, and I'm sure he's happy when the book isn't there.
Librarian: Yes.
Assistant: You see, he says the book is very good. He liked it, and he wants other peolpe to read it.
Librarian: Well, all rigth. Tell me, are there any more readers — like Mr Williams. I mean.
Assistant: Oh, no. There're no one else like him.
