1.The speech

Good evening everyone, and class begins! Now stand up! Hey, if I werethe teacher especially the one in your high school, what would you say to mewhen you heard this command. Yeah, you should stand up and say, “Good eveningsir”. Then I should say, “thank you and sit down please and let’s being ourclass”. OK, just kidding. I am a teacher but I will definitely not practicethis rigid routine in my class and of course I ain’t delivering any lecturetonight. Right now, I’m Victor, a member of TMC, and tonight I will bring youmy CC2 speech — All About a Teacher.

When I was a kid, I used to quite admire my teachers who’d come intothe classroom, with books in hand and stand on the platform to tell us all heor she’d known. It was just like he or she was shining there. Sometimes theteacher would ask us to come on stage just like to sing a song, teach thefellow students about how to solve a certain problem, which seemed to be quitea good chance to “shine” but I was just like too shy to go out of my seats. Butyou know what, I would make up for this missed opportunity. One day, I wouldcome to the empty classroom veeeeryearly when no one was there and emulate what the teacher had always been doingon the platform, opening the textbook, picking up a chalk and writing on theblackboard, and talking to the air, “Read after me, Gratitude!”. Then after theclass, I would grab my little cousin who used to spend her weekends at my home, pick out some stools and a wooden board, open my old books, pretend that I washer teacher and would tell what I just got from the school to her, just likethe scenes in a real classroom. With these little tricks, I could get thisfeeling of satisfaction. “Wow, I am a teacher!” Maybe at that time, what I heldabout being a teacher was just to “shine”, to enjoy this feel of standing onthe stage, to meet my satisfaction and pride of teaching, with a little bit of, to be frank, patronizing.

Then, during all my student years, I always took every tiny chance to teach, I mean, not as a part-time teacher. For my little cousin, still, forevery summer and winter vacation, she would come tome and I’d tutor her on the English study. For my fellow classmates, I wouldanswer all their questions on grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Maybe youguys will say, oh come on, so is what happened in all ofour lives. But I gotta tell you that Ireeeeally took every bit of this tiny chance and saw it as teaching. I’d tellthem how to understand certain questions, how to practice and how to keep it inyour mind deeply. If the next time my cousin or one of my friends came to mewith the same question that I’d once told them, I’d fly into a rage and shoutedto them, “Hey, I just told you this a few days before? How could you forgetabout it? Wasn’t I clear at that time? Now take out your notebook and pen andlet’s do it again. Promise you won’t make the same mistake again!” Maybe it seemed a little bit pushy but it also helped me solidify what I once learned. This time, I still want to meet my satisfaction, but, it is not merely the satisfaction and pride of teaching or standing on stage, it is the happiness when I saw them make great progress.

After graduation, I finally made it to become a teacher of TOEFL, eventhough my job is somewhat labelled as after-class tutoring. With the laughter in class and the gratitude of my students after class, I still get this feeling of satisfaction, pride and happiness. But it is beyond my expectation that Icould learn more, about speech and about life. I still remember that once I hada student who had a really difficulty time balancing his school work and TOEFL study. And what he chose to do was somewhat like escapism and procrastination,to keep himself in his own small world, full of games, idling away everyimportant moment. Before I got to know all of this, I simply thought that maybethis boy was just like incurable in English study. Actually, this is all hismother told me from a conversation. During that phone call, when the mothertold me about his son, I was feeling like she was talking about me. You know,no matter it is in the past or at the present, there have alway been times whenI wasn’t quiet myself and chose to escape from tons of work, procrastinate whatI’m occupied now. All of the mother said toward his son and her solutions, arejust like aiming at me. All of a sudden, I realized that my job is not merelyto teach them knowledge, it is also about attitude, about values. Also, being ateacher means don’t judge. Without any observation or communication, never betoo fast to judge. I’ve been officially standing on stage for less than oneyear, still there is so much for me to learn. For speaking skills, I am here ! For about how to be a teacher, I need to take every student and every class, totell the what I know as I did before, and see them as my treasure, to help themand to help a family.
