however和but均有“然而”，“但是”之意，但用法有所不同。
however 是个副词（类似的有therefore, consequently, nevertheless, as a result, for example on the contrary）.

but 是个并列连词（类似有 and, for, or, yet, so, nor）,用于连接两个相似的成分
(这里的相似的成分指的是：名词和名词；形容词和形容词；独立的句子和独立的句子，此时句子间要用逗号隔开，除非这两个独立的句子看起来很短，此时加不加逗号均可以)

Jack won the game, but he felt unhappy.
Jack won the game; however, he felt unhappy.
Jack won the game. However, he felt unhappy.
注意：一些作家认为but 不应该用于句首，他们认为要严格遵守语法规则，但其实只要不在一篇文章中大量使用也是可以的。
