英语中有很多形容母爱伟大的说法，其中最浪漫也最霸道的，莫过于以下这种：

The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.

“rocks the cradle”，摇摇篮，象征着母亲对孩子的关爱。如果一位母亲能够全身心地照顾和陪伴她的孩子，那么她将拥有世界上最伟大的力量。这种力量也许不一定能够“rules the world”，但它一定能够更好地呵护自己的亲人。

因此，It's important that we offer mothers every support we can. After all, the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.

这里，我们还要特别强调一下“rock”这个词的用法。在句中，“rock”作动词，表示“摇晃，摇动”。因此，“rock music”，就是我们熟知的摇滚乐。

但是，“rock”作名词时，就没有“摇摆”的意思了。作名词时，“rock”一般表示“岩石”或“石头”。

英语中，也有不少和“石头”有关的习惯用语。

我们先来看《时代周刊》（Time）中的一句话：

He hit rock bottom in 2006, so crippled by anxiety that he could barely leave the house.

句中的“rock bottom”，指的是“the lowest possible level or absolute bottom”，即“低谷，最低点”。

因此，上面那句话的意思就是：2006年，他走到了人生的低谷，焦虑地几乎只能呆在家里，寸步难行。

因为搭配了“bottom”这个词，所以“rock bottom”表示“低谷”并不难理解。此外，我们一般用“hit rock bottom”表示“达到了最低点”。

当然，在“hit rock bottom”之前，我们可能会“hit the rocks”。

与“hit rock bottom”不同的是，“hit the rocks”表示“遇到困难或麻烦”，“to encounter an especially difficult, troubled point, as in a relationship or some pursuit”。它的严重性，比“hit rock bottom”轻一些。

我们来看一个例子：

We'd been great friends for nearly 10 years, but our friendship has hit the rocks lately.

要注意的是，在“hit the rocks”中，“rock”必须为复数形式。

不管是“hit rock bottom”，还是“hit the rocks”，如果被击中的是头部，那么可能带来更严重的后果。

英语中也有一个与之相关的习惯用语，叫作“have rocks in one’s head”。它有点类似于我们常说的“死脑筋”或“脑子坏掉了”，也就是“to be silly or crazy”。
