第一章感觉就是在连蒙带猜中看完的，只能说大体内容是看懂了，不过也有很多句子还不知道具体是什么内容，也就略过去了。
作者林语堂交代了为什么要写苏东坡：一方面是苏东坡的卓越才华，另一方面是苏东坡的资料比较完整一些。然后根据整理的资料像星相家一样把苏的一生逐年断开来描述，后面的描写也很形象地体现出了苏东坡在文学上的才华和对国家和百姓的忠心和热爱。

diary
a book in which you can write down the experiences you have each day, your private thoughts, etc.
journal
a written record of the things you do, see, etc. every day
就是想区分一下diary和journal,因为之前看《小屁孩儿日记》的时候里面也有提到他写的不是diary而是journal，看英文释义diary比较私密一些，会有一些隐私，就是我们通常说的日记，但是journal就是所见所闻所做之事的记录，像日志或者说是札记。

defination: If you black out the memory of something, you try not to remember it because it upsets you.
eg: That period of time is just a sad memory for me so I want to black it out.
