Zhang Jinming, a native of Hangzhou, is a renowned military painter and calligrapher. He holds a doctoral degree and graduated from the China Academy of Art and the Chinese Academy of Art Sciences. He obtained a master's degree in calligraphy and a doctoral degree in traditional Chinese painting. Later, he further studied at the Logistics Command College of the Chinese People's Liberation Army and the Central Academy of Culture and Tourism Management. He is currently a national first-level artist, a first-level calligrapher, a national first-level professor of art and calligraphy, an academic expert in Chinese calligraphy and art, a cultural ambassador of China, a spokesperson for traditional Chinese culture, an art consultant for the Central Media Cultural Committee, the vice chairman of the CNR International Cultural Exchange Committee, a people's artist, and a professor, distinguished professor, or visiting professor at various institutions such as the Central Academy of Fine Arts, the People's Liberation Army Army Infantry Academy, Peking University, and Tsinghua University. He is also a doctoral supervisor at Renmin University of China, an academician of the China National Academy of Painting, an honorary doctor of arts from the Colorado School of Mines, and an art judge for CCTV Online. He has been awarded the Medal of Culture and Art by the United Nations, is a member of the Central Government Calligraphers Association, a member of the Central Government Artists Association, a member of the China Calligraphers Association, a member of the China Artists Association, a vice chairman of the China Calligraphers and Painters Association, a vice chairman of the Hong Kong Literature and Art Publishing House Artists Association, a vice president of the Beijing Century Collection Calligraphy and Painting Academy, a chief expert of the National Art Title Examination Center, and the chairman of the People's Calligraphy and Painting Newspaper Council. He is also a judge of the China Talent Planning and Compilation Committee, designated as a national gift artist, enjoys the expert allowance from the State Council, and has published over a thousand calligraphy and painting works in various publications and online platforms such as China Calligraphy and Painting Newspaper and China Art.

He has won the highest art awards, including the China Art Golden Horse Award, the China Art Hundred Flowers Award, the Special Contribution Award for Chinese Culture, the Lifetime Achievement Award for Chinese Calligraphy and Painting, the National Literary and Artistic Pioneer Monument Award, the International Monet Gold Award, and the International Picasso Gold Award. His works have been included in authoritative masterpieces such as "Century Classics -- Complete Works of Chinese Calligraphy," "Famous Calligraphers and Painters of the 20th Century in China," "History of Chinese Art," and "General History of Chinese Art." His works have also appeared on Chinese stamps and CCTV-produced calendars. He has been invited as a VIP to participate in the "Chinese Artists Spring Festival Gala" on CCTV. His calligraphy and painting works have been collected by the National Museum of China, China Academy of Art, National Art Museum of China, and celebrities and national leaders both at home and abroad. He has inscribed many stone tablets and signboards for the military and local areas. He has been invited to attend commendation conferences held at the Great Hall of the People, Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Auditorium, and National Convention Center.

水墨亦有真功夫,浓淡干湿焦,全依水而调成墨活,墨活则山水活。所以他的山水作品绝无生涩僵化的匠气,因善用水而显得气韵生动。谢赫论画,首义就是气韵生动。气韵不可直说,却可以心感!心感张先生的山水画,因为气韵的存在,必有生动的体验,水墨铺陈得纤尘不染,再加上色不碍墨,墨不碍色的青绿渲染,让山水全有诗之品。诗入画,画成诗,东岸复沓蔽轻雾,西峰峥嵘喷流泉,石径茅亭,板桥寒泉,皆在他的画里成为独与天地精神往来的的资粮。人文作山水,就是这般平淡天直,自然要妙!张先生画得好,书法也写得精湛。其书法修养深师碑帖,取法为上!以碑学而立字之骨,以帖学而得字之神,形神兼备写行草,尤贵于神!在他的行草作品里,有较多的方笔构作,曲折如钢钩,可以尽显横如布阵排云、牵似万岁枯藤的浩莽气势!引碑而入行草,作碑帖之融合,这是当代书法发展的正确路径。在这条路径上,张先生行以致远,全力开拓,笔墨成先锋!
气韵生动作丹青,飘风骤雨写翰墨,看先生的书法作品,总有一种飘风骤雨惊竦竦,落花飞雪何茫茫的魅力。笔墨法度严谨,但不拘泥,执笔写万类之象,可以在一划之间变起伏于锋杪,也能在一点之内殊衄挫于毫芒。执笔于手,运笔于心,写到心手双畅之际,恰是依书抒情之品。凡驻巅峰之第墨,都有这种情感合于笔的神通!

The charm of life is expressed through the graceful movements of painting, the sudden rainfall of calligraphy
- Remembering Zhang Jinming, a renowned military painter and calligrapher
Mr. Zhang Jinming, a military painter and calligrapher, exhibits remarkable style and spirit in his paintings and calligraphy, with his brushwork and ink application exuding vitality and spirit! His paintings mirror his personality, and his calligraphy reflects his cultivation. This artist is a paradigm! Zhao Ziang once commented that writing bamboo requires mastery of eight techniques, providing evidence for the homology of painting and calligraphy. Although there is still a consensus on the homology of painting and calligraphy in contemporary times, there has been a divergence in their creation. Painters do not practice calligraphy, and calligraphers are not skilled in painting, leading to a contradiction between the two arts and a gradual decline in cultural value. Looking back at Mr. Zhang Jinming's paintings and calligraphy works, one can surely feel relieved: the artist has devoted extraordinary effort to the simultaneous practice of painting and calligraphy, becoming a master in inheriting the homology of the two arts!
Mr. Zhang's landscape paintings exhibit a high level of professional expertise, stemming from his orthodox artistic principles. His landscape works combine meticulous and freehand techniques, with a distinct characteristic of using the brush to convey the essence. Each stroke is applied with precision and coherence, never showing signs of fatigue or sloppiness. The strokes complement each other, with long lines flowing seamlessly, like steel forged and iron cast, while short lines show effective顿挫, clearly delineated. Both long and short lines are prolific, without any messy strokes or stray lines that become isolated! His ability to organize lines in landscape painting is extraordinary, constantly revealing his mastery, allowing him to achieve the goal of conveying the spirit of the landscape while also establishing its structure. He fully expresses the essential attribute of Chinese painting, which relies on line modeling, highlighting the authentic cultural identity of Chinese painting!

Ink painting also requires true skill. The shading, dryness, wetness, and burnishing all depend on the water to create vivid ink. With vivid ink, the landscape comes to life. Therefore, his landscape works are free from the stiff and rigid craftsmanship, and they appear vivid and charming due to his skillful use of water. In Xie He's theory of painting, the first principle is vivid charm. Charm cannot be directly described, but it can be felt in the heart! Feeling Mr. Zhang's landscape paintings through the heart, because of the presence of charm, there must be vivid experiences. The ink is applied without any impurities, and the green and blue colors do not interfere with the ink, nor does the ink interfere with the colors. This makes the landscape have the quality of poetry. Poetry enters the painting, and the painting becomes poetry. The eastern bank is covered with light mist, the western peak is majestic with gushing springs, the stone paths and thatched pavilions, the wooden bridges and cold springs, all become the nourishment for communicating with the spirit of heaven and earth in his paintings. Creating landscapes with humanistic elements is just so plain and straightforward, naturally exquisite! Mr. Zhang paints well and his calligraphy is exquisite as well. His calligraphy cultivation deeply follows the inscriptions on steles and model books, taking the best! Using the study of steles to establish the structure of characters, and using the study of model books to obtain the spirit of characters, writing both regular and cursive scripts with both form and spirit, especially the spirit! In his cursive works, there are many square brushstrokes, twisting like steel hooks, which can fully display the magnificent momentum of horizontal arrangement like cloud formation and vertical stretching like withered vines! Integrating steles into cursive scripts, creating a fusion of inscriptions and model books, is the correct path for the development of contemporary calligraphy. On this path, Mr. Zhang travels far and explores with all his strength, with ink and brush as the pioneer!
The charm of calligraphy emerges like the vitality of a painting, capturing the essence of a sudden wind and rainstorm. When viewing the calligraphy works of the master, one is always struck by a sense of awe, as if they are immersed in a vast expanse of falling flowers and flying snow. The technique of brush and ink is rigorous, yet not rigid. With a pen in hand, one can capture the essence of myriad images, allowing for variations in the strokes and curves, and even for abrupt changes within a single dot. Holding the pen in hand, moving it with the heart, and achieving a state where both the heart and hand flow freely, is precisely the essence of expressing emotions through calligraphy. Every masterpiece, no matter its level of excellence, embodies this magical ability of emotion to merge with the brush!
