[外刊精读] 经济学人 Day 21

It seems no stop could be seen among the Middle East conflicts, which are prone to be escalated and aggravated day after day, leaving people here live with fear and untold sufferings. The Middle East is situated in the Western Asia, an area paired with splendid historical heritages and battles for power among different ethnic groups. As a melting pot and watershed of western and eastern cultures, it is home to numerous exotic treasures and legends, giving us an image of past prosperity and stability.

Why a different image has cast to the Middle East conflict now? A few words can be used to summarize its historical background: one ancestor, two enthincities, three diasporas, four battles. In addition to these historically inherent factors, there are  fraught with external threats from other powers.

For example, Iran, known as an “obstinate and tough” country, has been regarded to be the most aggressive enemy to America, the biggest culprit behind the Middle East conflicts. Those who has some knowledge on this area may have a clear picture in mind that no true peace can be really reached as long as oil and other strategic resources have their presences in this area. Iran has been under the economic sanction from the international community due to the nuclear weapons. Last year, a top Iranian military leader was killed by Washington, adding a heavy stroke to the already hostile relation. As a result, US-Iranian relation plunged to a record low. For America, oil in the Middle East has been put in its bag and it also needs an export of its domestic contradiction. Out of these considerations, this area has not and will not be peaceful. Without these conflicts, you may still have the chance to appreciate and wonder at the grandest Bamyan Buhhda in Afghanistan. Sadly, this Buhhda was destroyed by Taliban forces, with remains left.
