A. Texts & Notes
1.Where's Mr Robinson's office?
Businessman: Good morning. I'm looking for Mr Robinson?
Receptionist: Mr Robinson's office is on the second floor, Room 205.
Businessman: Thank you.
Man: Excuse me. Is there a telephone here?
Receptionist: Yes, It's on this floor, the ground floor. Over there. Next to the lift.
Man: Thank you.
Receptionist: Can I help you?
Woman: Yes, please. I can to see Mrs Bramley.
Receptionist: Mrs Bramley's office is on the fourth floor, Take the lift to the fourth floor. It's Room 403.
Woman: Thank you very much.
意思是底层,第二层开始计数,称 the first floor,第三层称 the second floor,……
Mr Robinson's office is on the second floor, Room 205.
在第几层楼,说 on the (第几)floor.
— Where‘s the bar?(酒吧在哪儿?)
— Pardon, sir?(什么?
— Where's the bar?
— It's on the first floor.(在一楼。)*
2. How can I get here?
John: Hello, Linda. These are for you?
Linda: Oh, how nice! They are lovely. Thank you, John.
John: Would you have dinner with me the evening?
Lindar: Of course. Where?
John: Let's go to the Italian restaurant in Green Street, Franco's.
Linda: Can you tell me the way?
John: Go along North Street. Turn left down West Street. Take the second turning on the right. That's Green Street. And Franco's Restaurant is on the corner, next to the Grand Hotel. And now I want to see Mr Jones. Can you tell me the way?
Linda: Along there. Third door on the left.
注3:There are for you. 也可以说 This is for you.
注4:How nice! 如:How hot! (多热啊!)How beautiful!
How can I get there? 或 Can you tell me the way? 例:How can I get Fraunco' ? Can you tell me the way in Beijing Station?
Go along (down) West Street. Walk up the road.
炷7:在这段课文中,take the secend turning 的 take 是”拐弯“的意思。在上一段课文中,take the lift 的 take 是”乘“的意思,to take 的词义很多,需要根据上下文来定。例如:take a bath (洗个澡);take taxi (乘出租车);take a look (看一看);take a up of tea (喝杯茶);take a rest (休息一下)。
注8:在第四课中我们学了 first left 和 first right,它们就是 the first turning on the left(right) 的省略说法。
3. Can you tell me the way?
Linda: Excuse me. Can you tell me the way to Bridge Street, please?
Woman: Yes. Go down this Street and take the third turning on the right.
Linda: Down this Street, then it's the third turning on the …
Woman: Right. It's on the right. The third turning on the right.
Linda: Thank you very much.
Jonhn: I'm very sorry. I'm late. Linad.
Linda: That's all right. But Franco's Restaurant isn't here now. It's in Bridge Street.
Jonhn: Where's Bridge Street?
Linda: I can tell you the way, I think.
注9:用 I'm sorry … That's all right. 注意比较 Not at all.
A. I'm sorry. I couldn't come.
B. That's all right.
A. Thank you very much for your help.
B. Not at all.
Not at all. 可以用 You're welecome.
