FOR:
Bodybuilding can let one person be more self-confident and increase one’s self-esteem. If bodybuilders train well, they will gain a beautiful body and strong muscle, which could help them look good. Thus, they could improve their self-image, attract more attention, gain respect from other people, and have a relatively good social status. Also, by training to lift heavy weight, they have more courage to overcome challenges in their future life.
Bodybuilders can participate in some bodybuilding events. If they get good prize, they will be familiar to the public. Arnold Schwarzenegger used to be a bodybuilder, and later he became a famous actor, governor. Winning a bodybuilding competition can be extremely rewarding as an individual.
Another advantage is bodybuilding makes one person more self- disciplined. In order to keep the shape of the body and muscle, bodybuilders have to train regularly for long time. If they suspend bodybuilding for only few days, the muscle will shrink. This discipline eventually gets into every perspective in their daily life.
Besides, bodybuilding could strengthen people’s immunity and let them become healthy. Doing such exercises everyday could reduce the risk of becoming overweight or having hypertension.
Bodybuilding could make people rest and sleep well. After vigorous exercises, muscles will send signals to your nerves, so you will feel tired. You have to get enough rest to get rid of this fatigue. For young people, bodybuilding makes them get away from places like bars, KTVs or Internet cafes. To the society as a whole, it reduces the crime rate.
AGAINST:
Bodybuilding increases the risk of sudden death and potential for injuries. According to a study result from Yale New Haven Hospital, heavy lifting by bodybuilders can cause torn aortas. There are many bodybuilders with heart conditions hadn't been diagnosed died from ruptured aortas. (Thomas, 2016) The reason behind this is bodybuilding will raise the blood pressure, enlarge and tear the aorta of bodybuilders. Also, bodybuilding stresses muscles and joints, thus many body builders have shoulder and knee ailments. This would eventually cause lower life expectancy.
Being a bodybuilder is not that easy. It takes a lot of time and hard training to get to the level of an actual “bodybuilder”. In most cases, bodybuilders need to train for more than 6 hours per day. Some bodybuilders even train for 10 hours a day. During this time, bodybuilders cannot make any profit. Instead, they are spending money. Most bodybuilders are young, becoming bodybuilders sacrifices their most precious time.
What’s more, bodybuilders need to have a strict and unhealthy diet in order to gain such big muscles. Many bodybuilders overtake proteins to have lean muscle, in the days before a bodybuilding competition. Some may even directly dehydrate themselves. Dehydration makes them lose electrolytes and results in weakness, dizziness, and occasionally arrhythmias.
In the United States, it is very common to take chemicals like steroid to keep the muscles, however, it is very expensive to take these chemicals, in addition, these chemicals could cause heart disease, liver damage and atrophy of the testicles.
