我觉得要特别注意a lot的这种用法，过去我基本只会说a lot of或者lots of。但现在我发现很多时候老外会用a lot 来做名词，指代前面所提到过的某个事情。

I ate a lot at lunch.

I read a lot.

I learned a lot from that experience.

另外a lot还可以做副词，与very或very much类似的意义。

比如 thanks a lot. I like this movie a lot. She looks a lot healthier than before.
