Access to lots of information on the internet has undoubtedly facilitated people’slives in all aspects, but also given rise to much controversy and problems. Inmy opinion, we should treat it as a two-edge sword and make use of itaccordingly.
Beforethe dawn of the internet, we had to go to the library, searching books andlaboriously looking up the information needed. Now we can simply readelectronic books and search valuable materials online, thus the internet offersconvenience and saves the otherwise trouble. Besides, the internet has also broughtthe previously inaccessible information to people. For instance, it is notnecessary any more for people to travel abroad to get a glimpse of what other culturemight be like since those information is now easily accessible on the internet.
However,it is also worth noticing the fact that sometimes the internet transmits falseinformation, made-up stories as well as fuel anger and other negative emotionsamong people. Children are in particular vulnerable to this. Since children arestill not capable of forming their individual rational positions and thoughts, they can be quite easily misled by those fallacious information circulatingonline and even stirred up to make hotheaded decisions. This doesn’t mean thatother age groups are immune to this. A typical example which illustrates thispoint quite well took place not long ago. During the US presidential election, quite a few citizens bought false stories spread on Facebook and voted forDonald Trump. Thus we can easily arrive at a conclusion that even adults canfall into the trap of misleading information on the internet.
In a nutshell, the internet can be both used for our own good or only leading to detriments. It is advisable for us to apply critical thinking and distinguish valuable informationfrom false and misleading one.
