每个人的语言储备库里,都有一个“舒适区”(comfort zone) 里面贮藏着平时用惯的一批语汇,某种句型,某种文风。它的好处是:容易形成自己独特的风格。短处是:缺乏新意,容易让人产生似曾相识的审美疲劳。
英语中有若干平时不甚常用的词汇,可以在适当的时候用于替换同义的普通词汇,顿时有画龙点睛之效,让人耳目一新。举例如下:
1. Albeit(可取代though, even though):
They’re an attempt, albeit through humor, to bring at least some semblance of order to a world gone haywire.
Albeit difficult, the job is getting done.
2. Notwithstanding(可取代despite, in spite of):
Notwithstanding some major financial problems, the school has had a successful year.
They went ahead, public opposition notwithstanding.
Hence(可取代resulting in, therefore from now):
We suspect they are trying to hide something, hence the need for an independent inquiry.
The sports meet will be held three days hence.
Inter alia(可取代among others):
He stated, inter alia, that international cooperation and coordination for implementation are major features of the WHO FCTC.
Vice versa(可取代or the other way round):
A man of high birth may be of low worth and vice versa.
“寻常一样窗前月,才有梅花便不同。”同理,寻常一样普通句子,才有几个点睛的词汇,整个句子的口感就完全不同。
