- 1、Yesterday afternoon Frank Hawkins was telling me about his experiences as a young man.
was telling 过去进行时
- 2、Before he retired, Frank was the head of a large business company, but as a boy he used to work in a small shop.
retired 表示过去的事，所以用一般过去式
used to do 过去常常做某事（现在不再做了）
例句：
1、I used to drink a lot of coffee.
我过去常喝很多咖啡。
2、We used to live in the countryside.
我们过去住在乡下。
3、People used to be happy when there were young.
人们年轻的时候是快乐的。
- 3、It was his job to repair bicycles and at that time he used to work fourteen hours a day.
It 指的是 to repair bicycles, 为什么这么做？
To repair bicycles was his job. 跟原句一样的意思
原因是：一个句子主语不适合太长，超过整个句子二分之一，所以遇到特殊长的主语，往后放，用it（形式主语）代替主语。这不是强制的

a small workshop of his own 因为有修饰性的成份，所以把own放后面

twenties 表示20多岁的时候
in one's twenties 在某人20多岁的时候
