This is a film blog which I would like to spare efforts in analyzing a single shot in the movie called “Rosetta”. I’m going to analyze a full length shot of about 80 seconds which is describing a plot of controversy between heroine and her mom. Also it emphasizes how is relationship between these two characters. In the next paragraph I will introduce the basic story of this movie.
After being forcibly fired by her employer, Rosetta, a Belgian girl, returns to the poor mobile home she rents with her mother to find that her alcoholic mother has accepted malicious charity from others. She and her mother quarrel violently. That was Rosetta's life, juggling caring for her mother and keeping her pride from drinking, and running around looking for a job all day. She sells off-season clothes on the cheap, waits in line at the unemployment register for a long-shot job, and comes home to arguments with her restless mother. In this process, she happened to know in the street to sell a baked cake of a young man Creed, in his introduction, got a job to do a baked cake, but soon was fired by the owner of the bakery with a little excuse, and because of the mother's constant do not dignity of things and separated from her. She boarded with Creed's family, but refused his desire to be close to her, and ended up on the streets. When life threatens to drive her to the wall, Creed asks her to help out in his own takeout truck, and Rosetta finds out that Creed is secretly baking cookies while selling them for his employer. Desperate for a regular job to support herself and her alcoholic mother, Rosetta has to sell out the pastry seller Creed, who has helped her, to get the job. Eventually, Rosetta returns to her mother's care and quits the job she was given in disgrace. In the next paragraph I will analyze the shot I mentioned in the introduction in detail step by step.
Firstly this is a shot that takes place in space of about 8 square meter, with fifteen actor’s lines, three props and two actors contributing to it, showing the controversy and relationship between the heroine and mother. Mentioning its mis-en-scene It is a perfect full length shot. To analyze this shot more specifically I would like to devide the shot into three parts. The daughter’s query. The controversy. Mother’s escape. Firstly I’m going to analyze the daughter’s query part. Rosetta’s view focuses on an unknown object outside the shot, and walks about ten steps facing the camera lens. And it is a close-up shot of Rosetta, as a foreshadowing for her words next and her object she focus on. Then she pour the water out and simply raised her advice for the person she’s looking at. Then when Rosetta speak her words the camera stays for a while to show audience that the person she’s talking to is her mom. Then Rosetta keeps walking, and the camera turned its direction and shot Rosetta’s back. Then Rosetta crouched and start to fill her bowl with water, also the injury on Rosetta’s back is shown to audience, however she did not search for comfort words form her mom, showing that she is strong inside and independent. Then the second part, mom has changed her position a bit and took a prop in which is also a foreshadowing for the next plot, making the shot not too boring as well. In the controversy, mom through the prop on the floor to emphasize her words and mood.by the way Rosetta changed her hand which holds the bottle cap making the shot more perfect or if she used the hand facing the camera she would be like disabled person in that few frames.then the last part when mom walks away the camera focus on the mom at the beginning, however the film is about Rosetta, so the when mom walks out of the frame the camera does not move but waiting for Rosetta to walk in, and Rosetta keeps asking mom and chasing her showers her tough personality.
This film is directed by Jean-Luc and Pierre Daedenne and it is released on May 22nd 1999 in France."Rosetta Beautiful" has a documentary feel to it, and expresses the theme that if society fails to protect the rights of young people to work, it may lead them to a life of crime. There is no sensationalism, no attempt to glorify Rosetta's soul. Filming with a camera on hand, the film presents a bleak and cold picture with a very realistic style and fast camera cuts, thus reflecting the cruel and merciless reality of the society. The pace of the camera is constantly changing as the characters move and the plot progresses, and the audience always seems to be at Rosetta's side, close to her, close to her life. There is no cynicism in the film, nor is it hopeless black. Jv Li(2016) once pointed out in his comment on tragedy that tragedy is shrouded in robbery, robbery is the basis and essence of tragedy. "Rosetta" is such a tragic film reflecting "robbery". The film "Rosetta" depicts the story of Rosetta, a social weakling who sacrifices her dignity and even her morality in order to survive through the realistic lens of an almost documentary. No matter in subject matter, plot structure and shooting technique, the Danes brothers all embody the Italian neo-realism style, which truly reflects the daily life, without strong drama conflicts and bizarre scenes and plots, and simply narrates the social status quo in the post-industrial period and the struggle and painful fate of the little people.
