绿袖子相传是英王亨利八世所作，这位异域国王，是位长笛演奏家。
据传，这位国王在一次出行中，看到一位民间身着绿衣服的金发美少女，一见倾心。但这位绿衣服的民间少女，对亨利八世没有兴趣，可又忧心国王的权势，最后选择了逃离。
亨利八世情根深种，思念不绝，午夜梦回，低吟：所谓绿袖，在水一方。
为解相思这念，国王命宫里所有女人都穿上绿色衣服。
终究伊人如梦，无可复求。
缠绵悱恻之际，作『 绿袖子』。此曲自此问世，流传至今
