A Haircut to Die For

“You’re gonna have a fabulous haircut today!” Jack’s Mum exclaimed.

“Whatever.” Jack groaned as he rolled his eyes.

After the car was parked, Jack trudged up to the dreaded barbers under the beating sun. In the mirror, he glanced at an average boy with hazel brown eyes, various freckles and skinny arms. Looking closely, he even had a freckle in his eye.

“Come on here.” A way too nice lady with a fake but huge smile said.

Menacing scissors, a towering, torturous chair, a droning fan and creepy posters looked into view. Jack felt his gulp radiate through the room. As he sat on the chair, thoughts of horror entered his mind as he clenched his fists. After what seemed like years, he opened his eyes to the greatest shock of his life.

He ran his trembling hand over his head. All he felt was smoothness. Jack shrieked with rage but it was all too late. Butterflies cramped in his stomach. As the sun rose up to a new day, Jack trudged to school.

“Haha, stupid loser!” Bruno, Jack’s “friend” taunted at the school entrance.

A crowd gathered around. His cheeks flushing red like a tomato, Jack silently slipped away like a dejected cat. Even the nerds rejected him. An invisible knife plunged into Jack’s body.

“Is it really that bad?” He murmured helplessly at his house when school had finished.

He glanced, frowning at the reflection of his rough, split-ended hair that looked like a mini jungle of dead, fallen trees with a few standing. Even the mirror laughed at him.

“Jack, you should be proud of your haircut, not hide it!” Mum advised but Jack was thunder and had already stomped away.

As the moon was replaced by the sun, he arrived at school again, prepared for a horrible day.

“Leave me alone!” Jack yelled as his voice cracked.

“Nah this is fun.” The bullies sneered.

Suddenly, fists as hard as iron rained down on him. Eyes wide like an owl’s, Jack shrank back. Jeering, the head of the bullies threateningly ruffled Jack’s hair. That’s when the ragged, split-ended hair fell off. Jack winced as he was exposed.

“W-what?”

“Y-you’re bald?” The bully stammered.

Jack slowly nodded his head.

“We’re so sorry for bullying you. Your new look is sick!” The boys exclaimed.

“Really? Jack muttered with disbelief.

“Yeah!”

Jack shrugged his shoulders as he stared at them.

“You shouldn’t have worn that ugly wig, you look awesome like this.”

Smiling, Jack enjoyed the day at school being popular. While driving back home, Jack’s mum winked at him.

“Don’t you dare say it Mum.” Jack glared furiously.

“See? I told you so!”
