Pasternak once said: “People don’t live a lifetime, not years, months or days, but only a few moments.” Most of our days are plain and ordinary. What lights up our lives are those tender snapshots scattered across the four seasons.
Spring rests on sun-warmed soft grass. Lying on fresh green lawns, the grass gently holds your body while your favorite music flows in your ears. Wind carries the faint scent of plants, and you look up at the clear sky, free from trivial worries. Sanmao wrote, “Time is beautiful because it fades. Spring flowers, autumn moon, summer days and winter snow.” The magic of spring lies in this fleeting, undisturbed ease.
Summer belongs to evening breezes and cicada songs. No far journey is needed. Sit quietly under the eaves and watch the glowing sunset, listening to the low hum of insects as the heat of the day fades away. Su Shi wrote, “Sit quietly with nothing to do; one day feels like two.” On such peaceful summer nights, without rushing after time, simply enjoying the evening wind brings lasting inner peace.
Autumn arrives with warm afternoon sunshine and sweet osmanthus fragrance. The sunlight is mild rather than harsh, and the sweet scent of osmanthus drifts along streets. You bathe in sunlight without hurry. The beauty of autumn is not in grand scenery, but these quiet empty moments. As Camus put it: “It is in this instant that people live.” No words are needed; warmth and fragrance heal all weariness.
Winter stays with falling snow and warm tea. Snow falls silently outside the window. Holding a cup of hot tea, you keep the unique tranquility of cold days. Seasons turn in cycles. Confucius sighed by the river: “Time flows away like this, day and night without cease.” Time keeps marching forward, yet we can catch these small warm moments.
As seasons rotate and years pass, what we chase all our lives is never grand legends, but shining moments in spring winds, summer dusks, autumn sunlight and winter warmth. It is these brief, light instants that piece together the most precious meaning of being alive.
