Three weeks ago, on DG Toastmaster’s 2nd year anniversary party, when I shared my feelings as a guest on that stage to encourage the audiences to join the club, suddenly a question came out of my mind “Nancy, why you not to join this club? You always say you are busy; you need find time. Buy why not to start from now?” So, today, I am standing here to start my 1st speech. Asking myself “why not” helps me start a new journey.
Going back to ten years ago, I joined a Brazilian company as an assistant. At that time, my written English is good, but oral English is very poor. I was so afraid when any foreign colleague spoke to me, especially he was a manager and very handsome. This handsome boy is IT manager, who was helping me set up my company email. He called me and he said “Nancy, your password is password”. I was too nervous to understand what he said. “Your password is password.” He raised his voice. “Sorry, can you say again?” He repeated three times. Finally, he gave up and sent a MSN message to me. I read it “Your password is password.” Oh, my god, I am so embarrassed. Later, a question came from my mind “Nancy, why you not to take lessons to improve your oral English?” Finally, I went into EF school to study my English class.
Two years ago, in 2016 the whole year, I had to face a lot of conflict and pressure from the job. Sometimes I couldn’t sleep well and the next morning many noises ringing in my ears. And next day when I slept well, the noises were gone. This kind of situation happened several times. I didn’t pay attention to it. But one day, I woke up in the morning, the noises in my ears came again. One day, two days, the noises were still there. I became more stressed and went to the hospital. I took the hearing test. The result said my left ear’s hearing loss 80%, which means my left ear was nearly deaf. I had to be in hospital to take the treatment immediately. Fortunately, after one week, I recovered and left the hospital. Later, a question came out of my mind “Nancy, why you not to keep doing exercises to avoid any disease? “So, from the beginning of 2017, I started running in the morning. In March this year, I participated in the marathon race in Qing Yuan and finished my 1st half-marathon, 21km.
Last year, I had to quit from my job. I was lost in thought for many days. “What’s the next career planning for me? “I asked myself. “To find another job? It means I need to re-adapt the new company, re-set up a new team, repeat the same career story? After all, I am not so young. I feel tired to do again.” Later, a question came from my mind “Nancy, you ever said you wanted to have your own business. Why you not to start from now?” I am a lucky person. Later, I became a co-founder of a headhunting company.
Asking Why Not led me to find another solution, to see a new world, to start a new journey.
