⒈In logic, this kinship is expressed by the term sequitur, Latin for "it follows."(The converse is non sequitur, "it does not follow.")
⑴先说一下英语的引号用法注意事项~
AmE:逗号、句号任何时候都位于引号内。
BrE:逗号位于引号外。如果句号与整个句子有关,句号放在引号外;如果句号只与引语有关,句号放在引号内。eg.The price tag on that old laptop was marked"Sold".
AmE:通常在and 前要用逗号。eg. "Dainty,""funny," and "sainty" are some of the adjectives that can be applied to her personality.
BrE:"Dainty", "funny" and "sainty" are some of the adjectives that can be applied to her personality.
AmE和BrE共有的原则是:属于整个句子(不属于引语)的问号、感叹号位于引号之外;eg. Ann, please stop saying, "He is a nice king"!只属于引语的问号、感叹号位于引号之内。eg. Ann asked, "How long did you live in Japan?"
⑵[term]此处是①"专有名词,术语"。还有②学期,③期,期限。
几个词组:[in terms of]就...而言,在...方面;[in sb's terms]从某人的角度来说;[in real/absolute terms]实际上;[in relative terms]相对来说。
⑶[sequitur]名词,推论,结论(根据前提得出的)
[non sequitir]n.前后不连贯的陈述,不根据前提的推论。
⑷[the converse]单数(singular),"相反的事物,(事实或陈述的)反面"。[converse]还有动词,是不及物动词,"交谈、谈话(have a conversation with sb)",短语:converse with sb.
⒉From this it follows that nothing else but belief-neither talent nor hard work-is necessary for success.
⑴由上一段可知,it follows-sequitur,it does not follow-non sequitur。
⑵[neither...nor...]既不...也不...
⒊The reason the two ideas are equivalent is that their meaings are inseparably linked.
is前是主语。这两个ideas(哪两个ideas呢?根据前文,一个是老师和家长鼓励小孩子的一句话"If you believe in yourself, you can succeed at anything."二是由那句话引出的推论--既不需要天分,也不需要努力,只要有信念就能成功)是等同的原因是(The reason the two ideas are equivalent is that)它们的含义有不可分割地联系(their meanings are inseparably linked)
⒋In addition to conveying ideas closely linked to it in meaning, an idea can imply other ideas.
除了表达与它在含义上联系密切地(closely linked to it in meaning)ideas外,一个idea也能暗示出其他的ideas。
⑴[in addition to]除...之外
⑵[in meaning]在含义上
⒌For example, the idea that there is no real difference between virtue and vice implies that people should not feel bound by common moral standards.
implies前是主语,implies是谓语,that people should not feel bound by common moral standards(人们不应该受公共的道德标准所束缚)是宾语从句。there is no real difference between virtue and vice就是the idea特指的。
⒍看到sound想到了soundly的一个用法:sleep soundly睡得好,睡得沉
⒎In many cases, we take ideas at face value and embrace them...
在许多情况下,
⑴[at face value]根据外表,从表面上看
⑵[take...at face value]根据外表(或表面价值)判断(to accept something as it appears to be rather than studying it more closely)
⒏In the course of time, our actions are shaped by those meanings and implications, whether we are aware of them or not.
⑴[in the course of time]after a period of time(随着时间的推移;经过了相当长地时间;总有一天;最后等等)
[in the course of]在...期间,在...过程中
[in the course of nature]正常地,通常按照惯例
⑵[whether]①是否②不管,不论,此处是②
⒐consider the series of events set in motion by an idea that was popular in psychology more than a century ago and whose influence continues to this day...
细想一系列的事件被一个在流行于一世纪以前的心理学上并一直影响今天的idea所触发(一系列的事件把一个流行于一世纪以前并一直影响今天的idea付诸实践),这个idea就是智力是基因决定的并且不能增加。
