During the recent validation call on 2018-06-15 13:00 UTC, a discussion was started about having more standby BPs for multiple reasons when it comes to increased security, resilience of EOS blockchain.

History:

1.Initially, the BP payouts were designed to be 21 Active + 100 Standby.

2.At a later stage the payout mechanism was changed to pay 21 Active BPs + Standby’s who earn more than 100 EOS based on their votes. So a threshold of 0.5% votes was set for a payouts. The remaining funds go to the worker proposals fund.

The total number of BPs (Active + Standby) have been fluctuating between 40- 52. So it would give us 19-31 Standbys to take over in case of emergency.

Reasons for a change:

1.One of the main reason resonated in the telegram group was to have more BPs because to make it more decentralize and also to improve security against DDOS attacks.

2.At any point in time, there should be equivalent number of Standby BPs to take over the EBPs. To have a more resilience network.

3.The latency will also decrease when applications have to communicate with EOS blockchain if the full nodes are more distributed across the globe. For example nodes in African continent can help the community over there.

5.The fear of centralization and too much power belonging to the EBPs was a real concern from some community members. Though that's a small sample, it seemed ubiquitous among those in attendance at several. Not to say the EBPs should act without referendum though, just an observation.

7.Also expressed by Thomas Cox during the zoom call was that the current voting stats represent more votes than 3% to a single BP, which is a bit more than what’s expected with this model.

8.The current VP payout depends on the time the BP is withdrawing the tokens. So during the 1st withdrawals, some standbys didn’t manage to receive any rewards though they have votes.

9.Having more properly paid standby BPs so they can run community initiative programs, e.g. local EOS meetups, will help everyone including EBPs by evangelizing the potential of EOS platform everywhere

Proposals/ Some suggestions:

1.Lowering the threshold from 0.48% to 0.33% or even lower.

2.Having 21 +100, the initial solutions (need to be investigated a lot of core changes involved)

3.It would be nice to have the minimum requirements of BP rewards to 50 EOS / day.

4.Another way to help distribute the voting numbers is to change the current voting process by controlling/ influencing the design of the voting portals. Currently the top BPs are always at the top and will probably stay there for a long time as the difference in voting numbers are increasing dramatically with time. Most people will just elect few of top ones and move on.

5.Original Model of 121 + adding some randomiser so standbys get to write blocks sometimes and none runners get to be standbys sometimes +/-

6.Assumption being then that 21 doesn’t drop regular. Could we have a swap out every X rounds rather than every round ?

会议情况
大家在会议中讨论到了公投的方式来决策出上述议题,及解决方式及资金来源的问题。参会的来自于部分主节点及多个备用节点,大家都发表了各自的意见,对于现存在的均表示出了担忧,会议之后将创建工具及后续开会以探讨改话题。
会议后续
此次会议中,来自中国的节点也共同表示:呼吁更多的token持有者投更多的尽量投更多的BP(选择区间为1-30个),这样以实现ebp+sbp数量增加达到bp的分散性,增加整个网络的安全性、稳定性和快速性。
