Lesson 17
Lesson seventeen Always young. First listen and then answer the question: why does not aunt Jennifer tell anyone how old she is?
[ˈlɛsən] [ˈsɛvənˈtin] [ˈɔlˌweɪz] [jʌŋ]. [fɜrst] [ˈlɪsən] [ənd] [ðɛn] [ˈænsər] [ðə] [ˈkwɛsʧən]: [waɪ] [dəz] [nɑt] [ænt] [ˈʤɛnəfər] [tɛl] [ˈɛniˌwʌn] [haʊ] [oʊld] [ʃi] [ɪz]?
My aunt Jennifer is an actress. She must be at least thirty years old. In spite of this, she often appears on the stage as a young girl. Jennifer will have to take part in a new play soon. This time, she will be a girl of seventeen. In the play, she must appear in a bright red dress and long black stockings. Last year in another play, she had to wear short socks and a bright, orange-coloured dress. If anyone ever asked her how old she is, she always answers, "Darling, it must be terrible to be grown up!"

2.despite 比 in spite of 语气轻。
- take part in, "参加“
- appear in,
- ever,

Answer: Not sure, maybe Jennifer refuses to grow up, and she is an escapist. Because it is always "safe" (I use double quotation masks because it is not true safe, just imaginary) as a child. On the other hand, maybe she thinks herself as a young girl as always, so she can keep herself simple and pure, and can keep away from boring.
今天的文章读到最后Jennifer说出“Darling, it must be terrible to be grown up!",有的人的理解可能是觉得Jennifer的意思是作为成年人一定很糟糕,所以Jennifer选择还是作为一个young girl吧。这么理解是没错的。而我想到了另一层意思,那就是成年人之间可以不必要询问年龄,如果都开始询问年龄了,那这个成年人得多无聊boring啊,才去选择年龄这个话题深入,这样看的确是terrible。
