Today is Tuesday.
The next event, the javelin throw, let everyone catch their breath. Using her friend's secret throwing technique, Amelia Bedelia threw farther than any girls and almost any boys. She won another second place. Amelia Bedelia hadn't practiced long jump except in her gym class. She had two chances to finish her jump. After her first jump, the teacher shouted, "Scratch," which means her toe slipped over the line before she had jumped, her first attempt had to be disqualified. Her second attempt was so successful that she got the second place again. The fifth event was wrestling. Amelia won match after match and just lost one. She got a second place again.
At last, Amelia won a special wreath of laurel leaves for her particular achievement. Her parents, her teachers and her classmates were all proud of her. Amelia was also very happy. She became a girl loving sports.
"Rest on one's laurels": to stop trying because one is satisfied with one's past achievements.
The end.
So what does shape up mean?
It means to get someone into good physical shape or to make someone behave or perform better. Both are right. Amelia must have gotten a good shape and became better at sports.
