Life transformation. It is special and magical when it happens. Suddenly, you realize you have made it through a certain transition. Nothing has changed, and yet everything is different, because you are no longer the same person inside.
It is no less special and magical when you watch someone else go through the process. Physically, that person remains the same, but spiritually it is as if a butterfly has emerged from its chrysalis. It sees the world through new eyes; it spreads its new wings and takes flight. It is an honor to bear witness to this, because a spiritual rebirth is as miraculous as a physical birth.
Life transformation is, in fact, the primary purpose of Tao cultivation. The ancients studied the Tao- the way of existence- not to develop philosophical topics of discussion, but to understand how we progress from one level of spirituality to the next. In their terminology, “following the Tao correctly” means successfully transcending to the next level.
The Tao that can be expressed in words is not the true and eternal Tao;
The name that can be uttered in words is not the true and eternal name.
The word nothingness may be used to designate the beginning of heaven and earth;
The word existence may be used to designate the mother of all things.
Hence one should gain an insight into the subtlety of Tao by observing nothingness,
And should gain an insight into the beginning of Tao by observing existence.
These two things, nothingness and existence, are of the same origin but different in name.
They are extremely profound in depth serving as the door of myriad secret beings.

A way called Way isn’t the perennial Way.
A name that names isn’t the perennial name:
The named is mother to the ten thousand things,
But the unnamed is the origin to all heaven and earth.
In perennial Absence you see mystery,
And in perennial Present you see appearance.
Though the two are one and the same,
Once they arise, they differ in name.
One and the same they are called dark-enigma,
Dark-enigma deep within dark-enigma,
Gateway of all mystery.

From what they say there and from what I have read elsewhere the essence of Tao is to regard Existence universally or impersonally, or so I understand.
Instead of thinking “I walk,” you think, “there is a walking,” until you begin to see yourself as a part of the universe not separate from other parts while the “I” is as the whole. I have tried this and the result is that there comes a feeling calm, of indifference to circumstance.
Life is made of limits, but understanding is limitless. Using the limit to approach the limitless—that’s dangerous. To do this and consider it understanding— that’s extremely dangerous.
