Zinsser将浮夸华丽语言的使用,类比于戴假发的秃头,乍一看美观但禁不住细看,细细琢磨不禁丢了自己的风格、失了特色。浮夸的短语、乏味的委婉语、语言的掩饰、流行语长词汇(pompous phrase, ponderous euphemism, Verbal camouflage, fad / long word)如同杂草,使文章乏味冗长,就算删除2/3后仍能清楚的表达其意。"simplify,simplify" 删繁就简。
而句子是否应该修饰美化,Zinsser说:
Extending the metaphor of carpentry, it’s first necessary to be able to saw wood neatly and to drive nails. Later you can bevel the edges or add elegant finials, if that’s your taste.
也就是说句子可以修饰美化,但它是锦上添花,不可喧宾夺主;不是盲目修饰,要有自己风格。
① 先踏实积跬步,做到语言凝练、逻辑清楚,确保织出来的是绸缎而不是粗布,再根据自己的习惯对语言加以修饰、雕琢。想长出参天大树,得先扎实根、树壮干,没有强壮枝干哪来繁枝茂叶。
② 基本准则:做自己。Therefore a fundamental rule is: be yourself.
怎么做:轻松自信。They must relax, and they must have confidence.
轻松:写作,自己要先放轻松,不刻意给自己太多限制,多少字、怎样的字体、达到怎样效果多少人会读?当自己受到这些限制时,自己便会分心,思维也会被束缚。
自信:写作一种自我行为,相信自己风格、观点。对于“I”的使用就算不写出,也要在脑中有这样的自我对话。

小技巧:
① Clutter 括号标识法:
I would put brackets around every component in a piece of writing that wasn’t doing useful work. Often just one word got bracketed
② Simplify 修改三步法:
Look for the clutter in your writing and prune it ruthlessly. Be grateful for everything you can throw away.Reexamine each sentence you put on paper.

Not only are those first paragraphs impersonal and ornate.
The reader will notice if you are putting on airs
airs[复数]
义:a way of behaving that shows someone thinks they are more important than they really are:
✏️ put on airs/ give yourself airs
例:Trudy is always putting on airs.
✏️ an actor with no airs and graces
air : opinion[及物动词]
义:to express your opinions publicly:
✏️ air your views/ grievances/ complaints etc
例:Staff will get a chance to ask questions and air their view

有自己的写作风格对于一个写作者来说至关重要,但不是盲目刻意追求,要明白自己的目的,按照一定的准则正确的练习,在准确的基础上锦上添花并逐渐形成自己的风格,而不是得意于自己随意发挥和天马行空,自以为的文采出众。细想,自己的文字风格形成也有赖于广泛大量的阅读,多读那些好的文章书籍才能更多的感受到不同作家的风格、文字灵性而有所感悟。
