Yesterday I listened to a speech about why the English ability of Japanese is much weaker than the average of the world, especially the oral English ability. The lecturer told us some reasons, such as the education system, the pronunciation of the Japanese, etc. However, in his opinion, the most important reason is Japanese people don't pay attention to learning English as much as they say. They just think English is a tool to import advanced technology and culture from other countries, but they don't want to export their advanced technology to the world. They are so proud of Japan that they actually hope the foreigners could learn Japanese.
I think his opinion is valuable for us, at least for me, to learning English. We all know the Chinese culture has a long history and it is really splendid, glorious and magnificent. We Chinese shouldn't be as narrow as Japanese. We are broad-minded. We learn English not only for learning from other cultures, but also for introducing our culture to foreigners.
