6 Tips to Build a Team from Scratch
Find advice to help build a successful team from the ground up.
Building a team can be a daunting task, even for the most veteran leaders. Where do you start and what do you do when creating a team? Here are six helpful tips to build a successful team.
Find the right people for the job. Teams find success due to people being put in the correct place. To take this a step further than just finding people with the skills to get the job done, think about how team members may interact with each other. Cohesion among team members will allow for more collaboration and lead to success.
Value each role. Teams size can vary from just a few to a few hundred. While it may seem that some roles will end up being more important than others, this mindset can harm any team. If members feel unimportant or less valuable than others, both morale and performance will drop. Communicate the value to all team members and celebrate their success whenever you can.
Lay out your plans for the team. Once you have your team, it’s time to think about how the team will work. That starts with developing a plan. Clearly outline what the team’s goals are, how the team can accomplish said goals, and how progress will be measured. Keep these goals limited and focused.
Outline how you envision the team working. You’ve got the right people in place and now you have a plan. How do you execute your plan? Successful teams rely on each member knowing how they fit into the plan. By clearly communicating the structure of the team, you can set expectations and bring clarity to how you feel team members should interact within their roles. Team members will perform at their best if they understand how they fit into the plan.
Decide on communication methods. Every team is different and the way you communicate should be tailored to fit the group. While it may be easiest to communicate via text or email, is that enough for your team? Creating groups in messenger apps can be great for quick feedback and updates, but messages can often lack context. To make sure the team achieves their goals, phone or in-person meetings may be required.
Constantly evaluate and update. Often times, leaders may have a vision and lay out plans they think will lead to success. Though they may have a great vision and well thought out plans, that doesn’t always equate to success. Once you have your team set up, your work isn’t done. All teams will benefit from a constant loop of evaluation, feedback, and updates. Build off of your strengths and find ways to overcome your weaknesses.
