文章开序讲述的是主人公John思考什么是爱，他当兵离开了家，回来的时候却不敢现身于妻子面前。他的爱很深从文章中的小细节中能体会，他想要过每天在妻子身边醒来的日子，他躲在树后窥视着妻子不敢靠近，他不断的回忆着6年前的他们。娓娓道来着他的故事。
第一章节是主人公John的背景介绍，他生活的环境，以及他父亲的描写和他与父亲之间的对比和交流。能从中知道，他们的生活环境清贫，他的妈妈很早就丢下他，是爸爸一个人把他带大的。父亲沉默寡言，厌恶社交，对于这样一个性格的父亲带大一个小孩着实不容易。
