Yesterday my son told me something about his homework. His Chinese homewok is writing an article about a kind of insect. His target of observation is the ants. Through his observing and studying, he knew lots of knowledge about ant.
Normally there are three types of ant in one colony. There is only one fertile female ant, the queen ant. Its main responsibility is laying eggs. All of the other ants in this colony are its children. There are many male ants, the drone ants. They have nothing to do except mating with the queen ant. And there are many female ants in a colony. They cannot lay eggs. Their roles are workers and soldiers. Here's the question. If there is only one queen ant in a colony, who is its mother?
My son told me the answer. A queen ant can lay many eggs, including some little queen ants. When the little queen ants grow up, they will fly out of their home with some drone ants and mate with them in the air.It sounds like a betrayal of marriage. (I made a digression). After that, the drone ants will die. Then the new queen ant will eat its wings and begin to lay eggs. A new colony is born.
