“Yes, I made it. But I don’t want to play football anymore,” he replied. Nervous and worried, Mark waited for his parents’ response, his stomach tied in knots. A moment of silence settled over the room. As expected, Mum and Dad wondered the reason for this abrupt change. Summoning up all his courage, Mark took a few deep breaths and stated the truth. “Fascinated by the vitality of cheerleaders, I would try out for a cheerleading squad rather than proceed with football.” Meanwhile, at the thought of his parents’ hope, Mark apologized to them, “Sorry that I can’t live up to your expectations.” Head hanging, he did not dare to meet their gaze.
Hearing his apology, Mark’s parents calmed down and smiled. “No worries, my dear,” uttered Dad, patting Mark on the shoulder. The comfort from his father temporarily relieved him of anxiety. “It’s absolutely right to follow your inner voice,” continued Dad. Mark looked up with eyes full of astonishment. “And we’re just glad that you can open up to us,” Mum added, smiling. The instant Mark heard these words, he could not help but be moved to tears. Gratefully, he threw himself to his parents’ arms with the realization that, but for the democratic family atmosphere, he could never have the opportunity to pursue his dream so freely and so firmly.
