Have you seen a movie Pay it forward? It is a based on a real story. 12-year-old boy Trevor creates the ingenious idea of ‘pay it forward’. He proposes that if he (while drawing on white board with circles) does good deeds for three people, and each of them does the same (and so forth) the world would most certainly change. Possible? Or impossible? Think about it. In the movie, Trevor invites a homeless man home and shares food with him. Trevor also helps his mom make up with grandma after so many misunderstandings. Trevor helps his class mate in a fight. To pay it forward, his mom helps the teacher be honest with life and his affection for her. The homeless man persuades a woman out of killing a suicide. Here is a scene. On the bridge, the man cried, “Do me a favor, save my life.” The movement of “pay it forward” never stops spreading from a small town to the whole country. Do you think it possible now?

Well, let me show you something about my personal experience that how we can possibly make it happen in our life. In the May of 2008, a group of teachers and students went to barbeque in the park. We can see many people BBQ in the park at that time. Suddenly, a man came to us with a bag of coal and smiled, “We are going to leave soon. Take it if you might need it. Enjoy the day!” Wow, I was surprised with this offer. Thank him so much, it just came in time. At the end of our BBQ, we decided to share our potato mash with the group next to us. It was specially prepared by Cait and tastes really great. In return, we were given some watermelon by the group. That’s really cool! But how could all it happen? Think about it. In respond, Cait introduced to me for the first time the movement of Pay it forward, which involves individuals performing three acts of kindness once they have received one each as explained on the white board.

See, it is possible! You can pay it forward with anything anytime anywhere even like a book. A teacher from Junior School gave me two books bought from Australia, Harry Porter 3 and Harry Porter 4. I love them so much and I share them with my friends who are also interested in. Whenever you come to International Youth Hostel, you might take a book away with you from book shelf, and return it in the next hostel. You are also most welcomed to fill in the shelf with your own books during the journey.

How about a lesson? We had just celebrated No.28th Teachers Day last Monday. Did you send your best wishes to your favorite teacher? I did. Frankly, I have benefited pretty a lot from teachers in university both in English and thinking. Then in my senior year, I was invited by a Chinese English teacher to share my experience of learning English to a room of freshmen. As a new member of Toastmasters, I have regular mentor review with my mentor, who helps me to achieve my personal goals of communication and leadership. In return, I wrote a blog about each mentor review, hoping that it could be of some value to those who might be interested in. You can check it out in our website.

See, it is so easy! As Eugene, the social study teacher writes (Show a paper with words on) on the blackboard, think of an idea to change the world and put it into action. I am sure all of you can do it, just like a smile to your neighborhood.

In honor of Old Man who used to a best teacher and friend in univeristy.

2010-8-24 Message from old man

After you graduate, I will be nothing more than a shadow memory.

I do not expect to be anything but that.

You, like all my other students will fly off and find others who will mentor you.

My job was never secure or permanent.  That I do not regret.

I only send people on their way by teaching them some of the finer points of flying.
