Scattered Clouds Nourish Life Chapter 3
Chapter 3 Visiting the Ancient City of Hetu Ala
Stepping through the city gate of Hetu Ala, I couldn’t help looking up in admiration. The bold, vigorous Chinese characters Ancient City of Hetu Ala glittered golden under the sun, silently telling of the Manchu people’s unyielding national character. Upon arriving, I first stopped at the restroom for a short break, then hurried to climb up the city wall.
Standing on the ramparts, colorful Manchu banners fluttered loudly in the wind. Gazing into the distance, the Suzi River wound forward like a graceful jade ribbon, presenting a magnificent and breathtaking view. This mother river flows gently from Hetu Ala Village north of the ancient city. Along its banks, winter vegetation displays a unique scene of brown interspersed with crimson, extraordinarily charming. Like messengers of time, they quietly narrate the ancient city’s extraordinary legends, witnessing countless rises and falls under the vast sky.
Winding waters twist a thousand bends; layered mountains pile a hundred folds.
In the cold winter, setting foot on this land for the first time, all I saw was winter scenery. Looking around this sacred birthplace of the Qing Dynasty, my thoughts wandered freely.
Looking northward lay the ancestral homeland. Between the Changbai Mountains and Heilongjiang River, the ancient Sushen tribe lived and multiplied here. Forty years ago, on official business, I traveled across Jidong, Jixi, Hulin, Mudanjiang, Jiamusi, Changchun, Harbin and Daqing, leaving unforgettable memories everywhere. Eighty years ago, my father traveled across the three northeastern provinces and even the vast northwest to start a career and make a living. His hardships and struggles became the mark of the family’s perseverance.
Looking southward, three generations of my family devoted themselves to the military, shedding their blood on the land of Handan. Millions of Manchu people settled in the capital region of North China, enduring the bitterness and hardships of life through the years. Their perseverance and dedication forged the continuation of the clan.
Looking westward, my grandfather settled in Kailu, bravely fighting against Japanese invaders in Duolun, Guyuan and Rehe, shedding blood for national dignity and freedom. During the Down to the Countryside Movement, my third brother stayed in Tongliao, Horqin, and my fourth brother in Baotou, Inner Mongolia, spending their prime youth there. Their experiences became footprints of the era. This land of Mongol and Manchu people was once fertile territory conquered by Nurhaci leading nomadic warriors, every inch bearing profound history.
A longing to trace one’s roots surged quietly in my heart, drawing me deeply into the moment. As if blessed by providence, people gather by kinship and bloodline endures. Descendants of the clan, no matter how far apart, always turn toward this sacred direction. They honor ancestors, inherit ancestral glory, and carry forward the legacy for the family’s future—and my arrival here today is vivid proof of this inheritance. Standing on this land, recalling the family’s past, my heart surged like rolling waves, filled with mixed emotions.
At last I have come! On January 13, 2020, I stood resolutely on the majestic city wall of the ancient Hetu Ala, the sacred land where Nurhaci led the Manchu to embark on the founding of a nation. Full of aspiration and reverence for ancestral glory, I resolved to carry forward the heritage. I longed to record the splendid six-thousand-year civilization epic of this nation and comprehend the true spirit of ancestors—and now I had finally reached this sacred place.
Filled with anticipation, I set off yesterday, planning to spend a whole week comprehending the great wisdom of my ancestors, drawing essence from history to grasp the true meaning of life.
With deep affection, I slowly left the city wall and walked into the ancient city of Hetu Ala, admiring the charm of this grand Manchu ancient town. I visited its palaces, government halls and pavilions, each building whispering tales of the past and soothing my heart. As the first city of the Later Jin Dynasty and birthplace of the Qing Dynasty, Hetu Ala carries the Jurchen people’s grand dream of founding a nation, opening a brilliant new chapter for the Chinese nation.
At the management office at the scenic entrance, paid services are available for tourists. A chartered sightseeing car costs 130 yuan per trip for ten passengers; a tour guide charges 150 yuan per session. As I pondered how to explore in depth, nine visitors from three families arrived. The staff smiled and said: “Perfect, exactly ten people!” I paid 28 yuan and boarded the sightseeing car smoothly.
The car traveled slowly along the rolling mountain road toward the first scenic spot. I habitually sat in the last row with a wide rear view. As soon as I got on board, I took my Huawei smartphone from my backpack, fixed it steadily on the bracket, and began my recording work at once. Vigilant and focused, I observed all around, eager to capture every unique beauty of the ancient city.
Just then, a sweet and clear female voice drifted over: “Dear visitors, welcome to Hetu Ala. Hetu Ala is the ancestral hometown of Nurhaci, founder of the Qing Dynasty. In Manchu, Hetu Ala translates to Horizontal Ridge. Upon this ridge stands Hetu Ala, the first capital of the Later Jin regime and the first imperial city of the Qing Dynasty, famous at home and abroad. With a history of over four hundred years, Nurhaci declared himself emperor here in the first lunar month of the 44th year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty (1616), establishing the Great Jin regime, historically known as the Later Jin.”
Her melodious voice flowed like running water through the carriage: “As the founding capital of Later Jin, Hetu Ala is also the last mountain city capital in Chinese history and the best-preserved Jurchen mountain city to this day. Regarded as the cradle of the Manchu rise and birthplace of the Qing Dynasty, it houses seven major temples including the first Guandi Temple of the Qing royal family. Built against mountain terrain with earthen ramparts, the city is surrounded by water on three sides and backed by mountains on one. Standing high with a south-to-north slope on a platform terrain, it commands a strategic position protected by surrounding mountains, easy to defend but hard to attack. Divided into inner and outer cities, it spans five kilometers around. The inner city housed Nurhaci’s family and relatives, while the outer city stationed his elite troops. The city once had over 20,000 households with more than 100,000 residents...”
While filming, I was deeply captivated by the guide’s wonderful commentary and couldn’t help leaning forward to look. The young guide sat beside the driver, dressed in authentic Manchu Gege costume, bright and elegant, as if walking out of a historical painting. Her commentary was fluent and expressive, carrying a magical artistic appeal that blended perfectly with the sacred city’s scenery passing by the window, engraving itself deeply in my memory. I glanced again and thought to myself: She might truly be a real Gege—my intuition tells me so.
“Gege? Impossible, that only exists in TV dramas. How could there be a real Gege in real life?” A young man sitting next to me looked utterly confused.
I smiled and replied patiently: “It’s true. Look at her earlobes. Manchu Gege follow an ancient custom: three ear piercings on each ear with three earrings, known as Three Piercings per Ear. All Manchu families know this well. As a Manchu descendant myself, I am very familiar with this tradition.”
The sightseeing car moved on slowly as the guide continued her fluent explanation. Three delicate earrings on each earlobe swayed gently with the car’s movement, shining brightly in the sunlight. I quickly captured this precious close-up, then whispered to the young man: “Manchu Gege pay great attention to ornaments. Three Piercings per Ear is one of their traditions. This detail reveals her extraordinary status.”
Her silvery voice drifted over again: “Nevertheless, this ancient city bearing profound history and rich culture was severely destroyed in the Russo-Japanese War waged on Chinese soil in the early 20th century. In 1963, Hetu Ala was listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the Liaoning Provincial Level. Since then, the government has invested funds annually in careful management and restoration, gradually restoring the ancient city to its original historical appearance. Today it is a national 4A-level scenic spot. Look ahead—that is the Khan Palace Grand Hall. Please watch your step when getting off; I will give you a detailed tour explanation.”
Tourists alighted one after another. Guide Yueyue led the crowd gracefully toward the Khan Palace Grand Hall. All visitors gathered around her with great interest, admiring her gorgeous traditional Manchu costume. She wore golden jade ornaments, silver hairpins and a unique fan-shaped crown, dazzling to behold. Elegant in temperament and graceful in every gesture, Yueyue looked like a beauty descended from history. Of moderate height, fair-skinned, slender and delicate-featured, she always wore a kind and approachable smile, winning instant affection from everyone.
Several young girls gathered around her like cheerful birds, asking questions curiously. While waiting briefly as some tourists visited the restroom, I took the chance to record multiple exterior shots of the Khan Palace Grand Hall with my phone. When the girls also left for the restroom, I walked over to the guide with the young man. Noticing us approaching, Yueyue smiled kindly and said softly: “Hello. Feel free to ask me anything about Manchu customs.”
I briefly explained my purpose, then smiled and came straight to the point: “Miss, when I first entered the city gate, I noticed most female guides wore cheongsams in purple, royal blue and amber yellow. I didn’t pay much attention to your costume in a hurry when boarding. But your outstanding commentary impressed me deeply during the ride. Looking closer, your fan-shaped crown is exactly that of a noble Gege. Your noble demeanor cannot be deliberately imitated by ordinary people. Your attire fully reveals the grace of an affluent Manchu family. May I venture to ask—are you not a costume-played fake Gege for the scenic spot, but a real Gege from an authentic noble Manchu family? In my family, female relatives have always addressed each other as Gege since ancient times. Influenced by family tradition for years, I can sense this naturally.”
“Yes, I am a real Gege. May I have your honorable name, senior?” Guide Yueyue bowed politely and replied with a smile.
“My surname is Chi, given name Chengzhong. I have come here specially to trace my roots and comprehend the sacred land where Manchu ancestors founded their nation.” I answered solemnly.
“What a pleasant coincidence! We share the same surname and ethnic group. My surname is also Chi, given name Yueyue. We might even share the same ancestor centuries ago! Please call me Yueyue. My father is the person in charge of the local Cultural Center, and my grandfather is the honorary curator of the Manchu Museum. Both are experts in Manchu history and culture. Let’s finish the tour first. We can add WeChat afterward, and you can exchange views with my elders—I’m sure you will share much in common.” Yueyue said warmly.
Seeing all tourists gathered, Guide Yueyue continued the topic of Manchu customs raised by the young girls: “All Manchu families know that the title Gege originally referred only to female members of the Qing royal family, later extended to noble clans, never to ordinary girls. Moreover, Manchu women attach great importance to hairstyles and head ornaments. The flat silver hairpin, about 30 centimeters long and 2 to 3 centimeters wide, is commonly worn horizontally in the bun. In the Qing Dynasty, noble women wore Qi headgear—a fan-shaped crown made of green velvet and satin decorated with various silver ornaments such as flower hairpins, side pins and ear picks. Manchu women wore three earrings per ear to follow ancestral rules, called Three Piercings per Ear. Manchu costumes were fashionable with colorful inlays on hems, cuffs and collars, favoring multi-layered lapels and sleeves. These decorative laces are commonly known as Taozi.”
While explaining, Yueyue demonstrated her exquisite fan-shaped crown and costume features for everyone to admire. Tourists were highly satisfied with this Gege guide, casting approving glances. As for me, witnessing all this, I felt an unexpected joy, truly having met a noble soul on this journey.

¡Por fin he llegado!

Nuvens Esparsas Nutrindo a Vida Capítulo 3
O funcionário sorriu e disse: “Perfeito, exatamente dez pessoas!” Paguei 28 yuanes e embarquei tranquilamente no carro turístico.
Todas as famílias manchus sabem bem disso.
Meu pai é o responsável do Centro Cultural local e meu avô é o curador honorário do Museu Manchu. Amb
