A destructive snowstorm hit Texas in mid-February and left millions without power. Equipment at power plants was frozen, which paralyzed half of that state’s electricity-generating capacity. This fallout explicitly demonstrates Texas’ ill-preparation for extreme weather events. It seems that the state’s electric-grid operators totally ignored the caution from energy regulators and scientists. Similarly, much of the electricity infrastructure was lacking in hardening measures. These two reasons led to this catastrophe. Researchers have proved that the global warming is linked to the polar vortex. In the U.S., electric grid operators can’t address these climate curveballs, which cause many kinds of climate-linked disasters. For now, worldwide communities should invest fully in measures such as hardening infrastructure and developing more localized energy production. For electric grid planners, they should construct an integrated and holistic system.
